Should Strictly have a contemporary week?

As they do in Dancing with the Stars?

I particularly liked this one:

I think it would only work if they do it later on when the better dancers are left as I don't think that the very weak dancers could do contemporary particularly well.

This is the way of the future.

    A Bangra week.

    A disco week.

    A contemporary week.

    A ballet week.

    A Jazz week.

    A tap week.

I just don't understand why they haven't done it before.

    It's the FUTURE.

And it will turn into a lot of rather sad late seventies dancing where no one bloody knows anything and we all shake our booty. I know, I was there.

And there might be the odd dance show that tries to SPECIALISE a bit, to make it actually interesting.

Eventually someone will AGAIN have this weird idea that a Latin and Ballroom show might be a bit of fun...

I love contemporary dance, but I don't want to see it on Strictly; the basic ten dances are being squeezed out enough as it is without seeing even fewer being danced.

It has been done before - It was called "So You Think You Can Dance" and it bombed here in the UK.

Not for me, I find contemporary dance most of the time just boring or incredibly embarassing :p However, I would like a Classical Music week, give the singers a week off! Please!

NO - the contemporary done on DWTS for instance is not of a high standard and it's just cringey imo most of the time, the pros for the most part on SCD show are ballroom and latin specialist - I would loathe them to downgrade that for pros that know a little in eveything introducing other styles such as this would I feel downgrade the show.

Could you imagine Anton doing contemporary???

I like watching most types of dance, but one I absolutely can't understand or stand is contemporary. It just looks like a pair of half-naked, scarf-wafting dancers trying to act out some sad ballad, involving much (self) chest clenching, with lots of arm stretches to each other whilst prancing around all over the place, accompanied by loads of agonised facial expressions (ie totally over-dramatic) with the bloke naked to the waist from the top and the woman (practically) naked to the waist from the bottom.

It also seems that a woman wearing a man's over-sized shirt is compulsory, and, when I see that, my brain instantly goes into sleep mode.

So yeah, my answer to the OP is "No, thank you." Sorry.

I must admit I have warmed to the dance style contemporary on DWTS.

So I would not mind SCD incorporating it into the show. They could theoretically put an extra dance on. Just scrap the Waltz-a-thon or whatever rubbish they have planned for week 11 and make them do 2 dances on that week. I think it's what most viewers would want to see on a Quarter Final anyway.

I doubt they'd try it, unless there's, say, an overwhelmingly positive public reaction to something like Mark's contemporary (/rumba) this weekend, in which case they'd try to work it in like Charleston was adopted as a full-time dance after Series 7. I don't really see the Strictly audience embracing it - it's viewed as naff and pretentious on the whole by that sort of demographic (like Karen Hardy wiggling her bum and gurning to KC & The Sunshine Band whilst painted the colour of a cheesy wotsit is the height of sophistication).

That said I wouldn't want it to happen, because based on the standard of it produced on DWTS it'd be a car-crash. Nobody's ever shown me a routine from it that I've liked and (no offence to the OP) the example given at the start of the thread makes every orifice of my body pucker up like a clam (although a lot of that is the singing jesus christ). And I'm someone who really likes the genre as performed on something like SYTYCD.

ah but it didn't have #celebs in did it...?

i wouldn't mind a parallel show with some of those forms...

I think contemporary is would be Anton doing the same dances he usually does without shoes?

yes, come to think about it, it would have to be a different show, with a smaller pool of pros and celebs, and definitely not including anton...

Anton's website claims that he's trained in Contemporary. It doesn't even read as a joke either.

No, no, no. Strictly seems to have copied loads of stuff from DWTS and none of it is making Strictly better, well not for me. I preferred it just as it was. The only thing I love that's changed is the better lighting and the way they project dance related images onto the back area behind the band, and on the dance floor like cobblestones etc. I wouldn't want to see any more dances ( Charleston is bad enough ) and certainly no more themes.

It has about as much credibility as contemporary.

Not for me, ta. More ballroom and latin content in dances! Recognisable steps even for us non-dancers at home.

If it replaced the God awful Charleston, I'd be willing to give it a go.

Anything, including clenched fists and scarf wafting, is better than so called comedy routines with jazz hands!

Absolutely agree. Bring in contemporary and next they'll be wanting ballet - just imagine the female celebs trying to learn to dance en-pointe in a few days; to say nothing of the male guys in tights ....... Mind you, it might let Darcey earn her judges fee for once!!

I love So You Think You Can Dance and when contemporary is danced well it can be really beautiful to watch, but I don't want to see it on Strictly. Strictly is a ballroom and latin programme and should stay that way. The pros are trained in latin and ballroom and the standard of contemporary would most likely be poorer.
