Alastair Campbell never spoke truer words if a story like this is front page by week 2 just quit. How many is this now? they linger around hoping things will fade

Campbell says he can`t remember saying it and nobody is sure of how many days it`s supposed to be!

This whole affair was handed very badly although tbh i dont think a grovelling apology would have been enough to stay the hand of the media or others....a few points though that should be stated.....these claims date back to 2009....when most other 'expense' issues came out.......(including other frontbenchers from all parties!! inc Ed Balls and his wife)..she was cleared by the panel of any wrongdoing this however highlights the panel should be totally independent and not made up of any MPs at all!!!..(a couple of the panel are independent)....although her attitude was called into question!

Should she have gone yes!....should other frontbenchers look at themselves (from all sides) YES!..........

She wasn't cleared of all wrongdoing. People who are cleared of all wrongdoing are not told to repay £45,000 (inexplicably reduced to £5,800) nor are they asked to apologise to Parliament.

The original complaint made against her was that she was claiming that her parents' house was actually her second home which is in breach of the rules. It turns out that her parents were living in her house as dependents and so she wasn't guilty of that. However, during the course of the investigation it came out that she had been overclaiming on her mortgage. She was not cleared of that.

in respect of how damaging this is:-

the BBC lists it's top 10 most read stories right now

1: Ultimate Warrior died, WWE confirms
2: Author to JK Rowling: Just stop
3: Search 'regains missing jet signal'
4: Pistorius quizzed on Reeva evidence
5: Wonga TV advert banned by watchdog
6: Prince George appears on royal tour
7: Man has acid poured over his face
8: Legend cleans boots after online row
9: Duke freshman reveals porn identity
10: Maria Miller resigns from government

despite this being right at the top of the news front page.

most people don't know who maria miller is. nor do they care. someone they have never heard of has resigned.

the story is nothing in the scheme of things.

it really shows how out of touch some people are, we have a thread to the effect of Cameron should resign.

    this is nothing.

I'm not sure you can necessarily draw such conclusions from a snapshot of the BBC's current top read stories.

Plus the fact that ordinary Joe visiting the BBC website isn't interested in Miller doesn't mean that Cameron shouldn't resign too, nor that it shouldn't be discussed.

ETA - Just looked and it's up to number 4 now and is the most shared article.

Now the media can drag up other stuff about her life.

Yeah, does she have any dead parents that may have said something more than half a century ago that the right wing media can dig up and use to attempt to discredit her further?

So we can't draw any conclusions from it when it's #10 but now that it's up to #4 we can?

(btw #6 when I just checked and #2 in most shared - below "Human Species may split in two", Mind you, this board suggests that has already happened....)

No not at all. Just pointing out that those things are not reliable barometers of public opinion. The story jumped from 10th to 4th in 8 minutes and is now down to 6th and it still doesn't tell me whether the man on the street cares about Miller.

I think once someone says a media witch hunt then it's about time to go. Thanks too her aid which let her down. Well done to Kay Burley. So which Newspaper then. Here we go blame the press again. No she didn't steal money, but didn't claim her expenses correctly.

    I think they're still living… in her taxpayer-funded house!

It dropped from 6th to 9th in the time it took for me to read one of the other stories.

And now it's at 8th! It's the 5th most read story on the Mail's website, second most read on the Guardian, still the most shared story on the BBC and the third and fifth most watched videos on the BBC website are about Miller's resignation. And yet I still don't know whether that means that people on the street give a damn or not.

Shapps currently in a hole on Radio 5 and still digging. Miller cleared, did nothing wrong, Cameron strong to stand by her...

Nice to see that the BBC is saving money by recycling a story first reported in 2006.

It's okay: apparently no one listens to the radio, nor watches TV news, nor reads newspapers.

This is a car careering of the road and hitting a tree, once you have removed the car the tree is still damaged.

People won't remember Maria Miller, but the damage will remain.

I found this comment on the BBC website amusing "Maria Miller has denied being forced to stand down as culture secretary after a damaging row about her expenses, insisting it was her decision".

So let's just understand this. If there was no row about expenses you were going to stand down?

The woman seems to have been in denial from day one with this issue.

"I was cleared of the central allegation brought against me by a member of the Labour party". They really will blame Labour for everything.

She has only resigned from her cabinet post, so she will still be in the house drawing her M.P's salary and expenses.

Like the many MPs of all parties that have been caught fiddling expenses and are still MPs.

What about all the others that have been caught and are still MPs.
Should they be forced to resign as well?.

MPs have been caught fiddling and are still in Parliament. Let's get the tory one.

She has done what she was told to do and has done it.

DC should go on the offensive and name the opposition MPs that are still MPs and name and shame them. Non of them are blameless.

He should include himself on the list then.

Yes, but he hastily repaid expenses wrongly claimed and seems to have had a bit of fun "optimising" mortgage interest payments.

I don't expect it will get into a slanging match over this, just as it didn't over the historic Harman / Dromey PIE claims, as both sides have too many skeletons.

It's sly of Cameron that he made sure she resigned *before* today's PM Question Time. He could say to all his critics "see, I got rid of her na na na na na!" :D

If he thought it would not come up, he was naive in the extreme.

And he is refusing to answer the question as to whether he asked her to resign.
