Previous mentors Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne, both 63, will make a sensational comeback alongside show boss Simon Cowell, 56. But ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole, 37, has turned down a huge pay day to replace Cheryl, 32, and will instead star in Cats on Broadway.
Nicole’s snub could open the door for Rita Ora’s return. But Sharon has already vetoed any chance of her arch-enemy and fans’ favourite Dannii Minogue making a comeback. Simon believes Louis, Sharon, Nicole and himself have the perfect chemistry to reverse falling ratings.
Our source said: “Simon wants to know he is in safe hands this year after last year’s disaster. He wants everything to run smoothly. In his eyes that means a tried and tested panel rather than going for a big name who could be a risk. Simon wants to know he is in safe hands this year after last year’s disaster. He knows that Sharon, Louis and Nicole all work well. They offer the right balance of star quality, fun and personality. Simon has really learned from Britain’s Got Talent that if the panel work well then everything else snowballs from there and that’s what he wants to create with this year’s X Factor again.”
Louis and Sharon have both verbally agreed to return after an emergency dinner with Simon and are expected to sign contracts when a fourth judge is on board. Both were happy for Nicole to join the show but she has thrown a spanner in the works by turning down the offer. Our source added: “Simon has personally been chasing Nicole but she is due to start Cats in July.”

is this reported only on dailystar?
It's in The Mirror as well, although it quotes The Daily Star as its source.
I'd be surprised if it was true. Both Nicole and Simon will have known about it since discussions started, it isn't like she has just signed up. This story paired with the Sharon story just looks as though they're trying to throw people off, or their agents want more money.
Cats doesn't open until the end of July either, which means they've got June and July to get the auditions and boot camp filming out of the way. Nicole's judges houses could then take place in New York, and it would just mean flying back and forth from October-December which has happened on various occasions over the years. It isn't as busy a schedule as they let you believe.
Why take the role just to give up the prime weekend performances? Especially during the holiday season? That makes no sense.
Have you seen ticket prices for big shows like this? Not sure if the cash paying audience would be too chuffed to get the understudy. Understudies are supposed to cover for emergencies and illness, not to allow the star to do a second job.
There's another role above an understudy - it's called an "alternate" (e.g. Alternate Elphaba, Alternate Elder Price) and has become more and more common in recent years. The alternate will do exactly what you'd expect - they alternate a lead role with the star name. An alternate's dates would be released before tickets went on sale, so a paying audience would know exactly what they were buying and whether Nicole would be appearing on that date or her alternate.
I don't think the theatre would be thrilled about putting in an alternate every week for a few months. They want someone who can commit.
So far ive seen two stories (posted on here) that first imply.shes turned it down and second she's being chased by SC to be a judge. And i have no idea which one is true!
