Plural of tardis

If you have more than one Tardis, are they Tardes, Tardis, Tardare, Tardides or Tardises?

One ephemeris, several ephemerides
One axis, several axes
(S)he is, they are
One chassis, several chassis
One iris, several irises or iris

Howver, if it's considered an acronym, is it times and relative dimensions in spaces or something else entirely? (Relative being an acronym, rather than family members)?

    I've always assumed it's TARDISes.

    Tardi?

That's what I'd have said, but I couldn't find an example of a word ending in "is" losing the "s"

You'd have to think of an analogy with something similar. LASER is an acronym, isn't it? so you would say lasers, so tardises.

    Logical, captain:)

It seems that given the effect of multiple versions of the tardis is arriving late all the time, then the plural should be "tardy".

You don't screw with the base of the initialism to create a plural form; TARDIS will still have to be part of it, it isn't a word on its own.

    As such, TARDISes.

Acronyms are never pluralised inside, the words remain intact - what a really dumb thread...is there nothing more interesting to discuss?

WOW, a bit snappy, it was a reasonable question I thought:eek:

. I would have gone with Tardi, until I read the posts, now I think I would say :

"There is more than one Tardis" :D:D

    But...

The Tardises got themselves blown up at the end of the Time War, so there can't be plural of them.

BUUT... They still exist. The Doc could visit a timelord before the time war, if they were living in a cave somewhere, and weren't affected by the Time War, and they have their Tardis. And all of the Tardises still exist, because they still visited the places before they died.

And this rubbish about 2 Doctors is rubbish. I can't explain that, but I will use an example. By the end of Torchwood S2, at one point, Jack is in WW2 around 5 times, but it isn't 5 Jacks. So; Technically, there is 4(ish) Doctors in WW2 at the moment.

As there are no more left due to all the Time Lords being trapped inside the Time Locked Time War, the only other TARDIS we will see will be a second copy of the Doctor's.

    Technically, no pluralising is necessary...

    :D;)

TARDISes. Aside from the fact that it's the only version that makes grammatical sense, it's been used in the show. Nothing to see here, move along.

Shouldn't it be "ships"? After all, Susan made up the nickname TARDIS........ :)

Tardii or the like would only apply if the root word were Latin.

But it doesn't mean anything. TARDIS is an acronym. What would TARDII stand for?

    The real question though:

What is the collective term for more than one tardis?

    A gaggle of tardises?

A fleet. They are transport vessels.

I was thinking flock, "flock of tardises" has a certain ring to it. And could also double as being an 80's tribute band name.

Fleet? bah, far too logical. ;)
