I don't know if it will work. How can they carry the story further? Also will Luke Skywalker, Leia and Han Solo be re-cast or will the original actors return?
The pre-quels worked well in terms of the original episodes. I'm not sure that an episode seven in three years time will have the same impact. I'll be interested to see what they come up with.
George Lucas's thoughts about episodes 7 - 9 back in the 80's of course this is obviously not definite just from WIKI
Episode VII would begin roughly 20 (or perhaps 30 or 40) years after the end of Return of the Jedi.
R2-D2 and C-3PO would be the only characters who might continue through all nine films.
The trilogy would deal with the rebuilding of the republic.
"It's like a saga, the story of a group of people, a family" (Lucas).
The focus would be on Luke Skywalker’s journey to becoming the premier Jedi knight, with Luke's sister (who was not Leia) appearing in Episode VIII, and the first appearance of Emperor, and Luke's ultimate confrontation with him, in Episode IX
Luke would have a romantic relationship with a female love interest.
The main theme of the trilogy would be moral and philosophical problems, such as the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned.
The key actors, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, would appear, in their 60s or 70s.
In Episode IX, Hamill would cameo, "like Obi Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope" (according to Hamill)
this is the worst news ever. let SW die ffs. All the changes already ruined everything, LEtting disney control it is like digging up the grave and molesting it. Ep7 will be full of teens and idiots from twilight running around with lightsabers. Most probably with a mass recast of all the characters from rotj
It's interesting news to say the least......it could go either way.
The annoying thing is that the Internet, blogs, magazines etc will be full of speculative theories for the next three years.
I can already imagine Empires "10 things we can expect from Disney's Star Wars 7" feature next month
So at this point I shall step back and wait and see what happens as let's be honest none of us have any idea.
Still can't quite comprehend this news. I would be interesting to see how hip younger directors would go about making a SW flick. Keep old turkey neck as far away as possible too.
Plus putting SW aside for a mo. this deal includes EVERYTHING Lucasfilm has ever done and own. Merchandise, video games, INDIANA JONES!!!
Omg it's like I'm 10 years old again sitting in the cinema open mouthed as a huge Imperial star destroyer fills the screen in front of me......excited much!!!! I think I might be
I've said for a long time that Star Wars needs to continue but that Lucas needs to hand the reigns to someone else. I think this is a great move and cannot wait to start seeing leaked pics from the set, rumours, trailers and then finally another Star Wars movie.
Someone with a plan for the SW universe as with the recent Marvel movies...could be a little special. Anyone know if Joss Whedon has any space in his diary ?
So incredibly excited right now (I'm such a geek having grown up on Star Wars). Disney have been doing a great job on the Marvel movies. Episode I, II & III were constrained by George Lucas' terrible script, and the fact that the trilogy all the events we knew had to happen before to lead into episode IV. With an episode VII the movies can go in any direction the writers want, and with Lucas only acting as a creative consultant we can have movies with a decent script and pacing.
I never thought I would ever see another Star Wars film in my lifetime. Really hoping this is going to be the start of something good.
i am so bloody happy about this. my son will be 8 when this comes out, perfect age for a new trilogy.
would love them to follow on 30 years from jedi with all returning cast! get a proper director and writer and this will make disney it's money back on it's own!

Original actors? No chance! Hammil and Fisher both look like Jabba the Hut these days, although I could maybe see Harrison Ford coming back in some capacity he was offered zillions of dollars.

Surely this raises the question as to why episode seven was never commissioned several years ago in the mid late 80s or even early 90s when the actors were still much younger therefore making for example a love interest for Luke more believable?
The problem essentially with skipping that far in advance in terms of years with the main characters is that for the viewer (film buff) you ask the question what happened in the meantime?
The plausible solution would probably be that Han Solo and Leia have minor parts (whoever is cast to play them) and that Luke would also have a largely peripheral role in order that the next generation Skywalker was becoming a Jedi on the good side of the force.
Problem with doing 7 onwards is that 4,5 and 6 (the OT) seem to 'empty' compared to all the characters, cities and planets that you see in the Prequel trilogy 'universe'.
Plus where do you go plot wise? I know Lucas had a few ideas floating around, but 7 on wards would be effectively starting from scratch as many loose ends were tied up in terms of action, Darth Vader and emperor gone. Leaving only the Republic being headless.
Is 7, 8 and 9 going to be full of political scenes that were littered into the Phantom Menance?
I really don't know what to think about this, on the one hand it's "yay, new Star Wars!", but on the other hand i just have a horrible feeling that they'll mess it up. I mean, John Carter shows that they can do big budget sci-fi without pandering to kids (and regardless of the horrendous box office, JC was actually a good film), not to mention that they've handled the Marvel movies well (ignoring the gimped Region B Avengers Blu Ray), but even so, i don't think the world really needs more Star Wars movies, i'd rather them focus on doing the live action TV series or something.
Still, there's no point writing something off that has literally only just been announced, and i'm sure i'll be there at midnight on opening day as excited as a giddy schoolboy.
Will this mean we can get a Blu-Ray release of the Original Trilogy, remastered and restored but without Special edition additions (Han Shoots First, ROTJ 'Jedi Rocks sequence etc).

Likewise
WHAT???????
You can't reboot classics... You just can't, history has proven that!

It should be set the next generation after Luke, Han and Leia, with the Jedi re-established and a new foe.

They did OK with Battlestar Galaxtica.

Bloody hell... that was hardly a classic in the first place. You can't seriously compare Indiana Jones with BG original?!?
