Why do you assume that those who object to immigration are automatically "xenophobic, racist and bigoted"?

    See how it works?

Their posts normally give them away. ;)

If people can get away with "uberliberalista Left in full flight" I'm sure other comments can be made in fairness... especially when they're slightly more accurate and less hysterical... :)

As it happens, I've been interested in Romania for many years. I used to have several penfriends there in my younger days. I have a fascination in Communist countries, the aftermath of it's fall, and in Ceaucescu in particular. I've read every book I can lay my hands on about him. I realised a long held desire last year to visit Bucharest, and found it spooky and enthralling in equal measure.

Odd attitude for a xenophobe, wouldn't you say?

Not sure where I called you a xenophobe?

I hope floridetei posts some more and isn't put off by the 'little Englander' type attitudes of some. It was a real eye opener for me when I was there as was Western Africa where, again, poverty was all around but friendly people with amazing skills existed. I have some hand carved ornaments from various places, all a result of time and poverty and the craftsmanship is excellent. One thing that struck me about Romania at the time was that no matter how much poverty there was, every home or shack seemed to have aerials on the trees or somewhere on the property. TV or radio? Not sure which to be honest or how everyone got one either. Maybe for Ceaucescu's messages to the people?

I am always curious to know where exactly in the UK you live.

I believe trevgo - plus me - live in east London. We see the effects on the poor and the vulnerable in terms of access to housing, higher rents, the NHS (waiting for up to 11 hours at the local A&E!), school places, lower wages, unemployment etc - they are the ultimate victims (i.e. the most vulnerable). And most are actually from BME communities - whereas these EU migrants are generally white.

So one might argue its exactly the opposite of what you suggest!

To answer her question she speaks english and we do not speak her language because the UK conquered the world and is far superior to her country that has never done anything worth while or influenced anyone

If you are reading this floridetei, or anyone from anywhere really, please understand that this attitude is reserved for a small minority of people and in no way represents the UK as a whole. An education wasted... :(

What you experience is a lack of government infrastructure, planning and trying to do everything on the cheap. It is not the fault of the people, or you and Trevgo, it is the fault of government. This government won't be happy until all services and infrastructure are in the hands of their private sector chums, they don't care about you, Trevgo or any immigrants. They care about themselves, their friends and donors. Start demanding proper public services, proper public infrastructure and proper council housing or forever suffer the overcrowding, lack of amenities and ever rising costs of living.

Yes - but that's not all going to be in place by New Years Day 2014!

Our infrastructure managed to cope until recently - you cannot just magic new schools, hospitals and council houses overnight.

Many, admittedly not all, who post on anti immigration threads on here come across as having undertones of xenophobia and bigotry. A few try to hide their racism, but are not very successful.

Some put across good points, but these are submerged in the ocean of xenophobic bile.

What I see most here are the "pro mass immigration fanatics" (can anybody name one?) responding - in the interest of balance you understand ;) - to threads created by those who would like to see Immigration reduced to "a nice round figure".

Yes! English is so easy to learn! Every uneducated can learn it. I personally learnt it just for fun and so i can show my respect to UK who conquered the world and is far superior to my country . I am sure this is also the exact reason the French learn it, and the Germans, and the Japanese....

They cancelled all capital spendings projects when they came to power in order to claim the deficit had been reduced by 25%. It's no good complaining now, that achievement has been trumpeted enough by government and supporters, now you see the reality.

Today's debate in the H of C on Bulgaria and Romania (second topic being discussed).

I'm not convinced there was much on display other than a bit of showboating and there were certainly no meaningful answers from the Minister, but any debate that results in Keith Vaz being put in his place is always welcome.

I've volunteered on flood day to get down to the ports to welcome our Bulgarian 54%... I'm handing out leaflets directing them to the NHS, benefit offices, housing offices and roads. We've done a health and safety assessment and there is only a 17% chance that England will flip over a sink into the sea. I think Surrey is safe though.

How generous of you, but to show real commitment I feel you should invite a dozen or so at the very least to come and lodge with you.

this is ignoring the fact the majority of immigrants have no money and there are not plenty of brown field sites why do you think there are so many campaigns to protect green field sites because the government are building on them

you do realise you are talking about migrants not immigrants - there is a difference

It is not the reason and certainly not the exact reason.

    Answer me a few questions:

    1. What is your opinion of the German advice to Britain regarding an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians?

    2. Why have thousands already resettled in other EU countries before they have become EU members?

    3. What is your opinion of Romas and what do Romanians think of Romas?

I wouldn't brag about Britain "conquering the world", mainly because it is plainly inaccurate and because dwelling upon history is unhelpful.

I was taken aback by how much English was spoken in Bucharest. Most young people seemed to have a decent level of the language, and it was really only with taxi drivers that we struggled (and their driving was more concerning than their language skills!). I expect the situation in the provinces is different, as it is in most countries.

We Brits are notoriously bad at foreign languages. I am a monoglot myself (other than a smattering of Dutch) and it embarrasses me when I travel. I believe we should teach languages from an early age, but the fact of life is that there is not the motive for us that exists with speakers of minority tongues. You wouldn't be able to travel or trade very easily if you only spoke Romanian. Or indeed, Dutch, Swedish or Icelandic. The main reason they are all great speakers of English. Whilst I wish I spoke another language fluently, I have traveled extensively and you can always get by with English. I think the most trouble I've ever had was in rural Italy. It is arrogant for us to expect the world to speak our language, but fortunately, that is the case.

I want to return and explore Bucharest more, as we only had two nights there. Managed the tour of Ceaucescu's monstrous folly, which was simply jaw dropping in it's crassness, decrepitude and complete inappropriateness. The man was a monster, with an ego to match.

Do trevgo's posts give him away? I must have missed something because we've been on here a long time and I am roughly of his generation and we both know just what prejudice, hate and bile feels like. I've never seen a post where he has exhibited such behaviour

I'm originally from the East End too,you will never get it through to the so called "enlightened" that its the ordinary working class British born people that suffer the most from the worst of these ridiculous open border fiascos.
It seems that "equal opportunities migration " has reached a point where people defend it beyond all logical reason, allowing unskilled, poor, non english speakers is of absolutely no benefit to Britain in any way whatsoever but hey, let's not have that get in the way of being "enlightened"
