As a long term 'Spy'er I've not exactly been a fan of this place's shift from news about the satellite and cable channels and technology etc to a rip off of Hello magazine, but I thought with stuff like Cult Spy it was easier to tolerate such a change.
But why am I not surprised to see yet again to the see genre of sci-fi being harshly treated in favour of up to the minute news about which ex big brother star has slept with which footballer, which reality tv series is in the headlines at the moment, usually simply because it is on the air at that time, and more vapid celebrity pap that fills up the rubbish bins of our society.
I'm sure the excuse will be "cult brings in the least revenue so will be binned in favour of expanding the popular sections" etc etc, but that's the excuse everyone makes, leading to sci-fi stuff being harder and harder to find by anyone who wants to escape the mainstream dross with some alternative news.
Oh well, another day another dissapointment. But this is going right up there with the BBC's 6 music decision in the
"Oh for crying out loud!" department!
Very disappointing news. Why on earth is it being axed?
As for Gay Spy, it is a total embarrassing waste of space (and I'm gay myself). Cult Spy on the other hand is always fresh, interesting and relevant.
Major DS fail.
A few years ago Gay Spy had some worth, as it was actually a news section - focused around gay-themed broadcasting news. I actually found it a pretty useful resource, but right when I started visiting it regularly it simply became a dumping ground for pictures of 'fit blokes'. That's something that's done far better elsewhere on the web (not talking about porn sites!), so what's the point? The previous version of it was actually quite unique, there's still nowhere else that covers gay broadcasting news (with a UK slant) quite the same.
As for Cult Spy, it was occasionally a great laugh so I'm sad to see it go.
Anyone from digital spy got the bollocks to reply and tell us why it's ending? People have asked it's the least you can do. Cults.
DS - Advertise job for new reporter and then cult section ends. Putting two and two together, I'd say that the writer of Cult spy is leaving and moving on to pastures new.
What did you guys expect?
Digital Spy - bought to you buy the owners of Elle, Red, Sugar, Inside Soap and All About Soap.
Their whole sales platform is vapidity, and DS's march from technology news to talking about Katie Price's private parts is pretty much complete.
If it wasn't for the forums, I doubt this place would stay afloat. Its certainly not acredited with "quality journalism" on the whole is it?
Cult Spy was one of the best parts of the site but DS has been in decline for a while new, reviews of shows are now limited to series rather than episodes and even blogs and reviews of albums in Music aren't as frequent as before. Even Gay Spy doesn't seem to be doing the weekly reader thing anymore (not sure everyone here misses that though :P)
It ain't the forum that's going. Nor is it the cult news section (presumably). It's just the blog. Which has mainly just been reviews, which are always completely pointless (I don't just mean the Cult Spy ones, all reviews are pointless) and some hit and miss articles. Mostly miss, for me, if I'm being honest.
Did Cult Spy get a reprieve? Seems to be going along quite nicely....
No.
Cult Spy refers to the dedicated Cult blog - a large chunk of its coverage is picked up by news stories or the Tube Talk blog, but the blog as it was no longer exists. There is no longer a dedicated Cult TV analysis blog on DS.
Current DS blogs:
Tube Talk
At The Movies
Level Up
Soap Scoop
Gay Spy
Reality Bites
The Assistant
The Sound
I was wondering if the 'Cult' section should be renamed to the 'Scifi/Fantasy/Action' section?
It's more likely to be renamed the "US TV" section, as the "US TV Forum" button currently points here, meaning a few posts have appeared recently relating to "The Hills" or "Jersey Shore" and other such sh**e.
Although contrary to that, the DS Cult news section is bubbling along quite nicely, and their support of shows like Fringe and Merlin continues to be strong, must give credit where it's due.

Strange time to drop it, just as the end LOST and the beginning of the NuWho.
