Where Have All The Viewers/Fans Gone?

10 or so years ago Neighbours were averaging 10+ millions viewers each day, while Home and Away were hoovering just below 10million, each day. Nowdays, with both shows on Five, Neighbours are only just scrapping 1m viewers, while Home and Away are not even reaching channel Five's top 30 shows, getting less then 750,000. So where have the 9-10 million viewers/fans gone?

Of course some conclusions are obvious like the young viewers/fans are not so young 10 years on, also 10 years there was fewer channels, but surely there was still plenty to choose from compared to 20 years ago?

So anyone have any other conclusions?

Firstly Neighbours was done to 3 million when it left BBC1 and ratings had been in a steady decline since 1990. People just got sick of the bad acting, cloying storylines and the fact it was on twice a day. Also teens have Hollyoaks to keep them amused now.
Secondly, for all there was digital television in 2000, it was far less common than now and nearly half of the population only had four or five networks.
