I'd agree with Atmosphere and Wild Is The Wind.

Van Morrison - TB Sheets... also his version of Carrickfergus.
    Tracy Chapman - Promise
Tom Waites - On The Nickel
Al Green - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

Diana Ross's "I'm Still Waiting" and Blue Magic's "Sideshow" always bring a wistful smile to Uncle Mikey's weatherbeaten old face.

Oh yeah I forgot about this Verve track - very sad (though it still makes me chuckle that for years I thought he was singing about dud e's) :D

I find Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley really sad and Stevie Wonder Lately.

'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley is a brilliant and a real tear jerker of a song. That ia also 1 of my personal faves. Along with:

The Black Crows: She talks to Angels
    Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars
    Sheryl Crow: Strong Enough
Eagle Eye Cherry: Lonely Days (Miles Away)

I know this is a very old thread but just wanted to say thank you to Mrs C for mentioning the Billy Joel song 'And So It Goes'.
I'd never heard it before so looked it up and am now completely obsessed with it, so simple and beautiful.

How To Be Dead - Snow Patrol.

More so coz this song came out at a really sad moment in my life and so when I'd hear those opening bars to the song, I'd start blubbing:(
