Ok. been looking online at different engagement rings. Worked out i can spend up to £400. (to hell with that months salary thing, i got 3 holidays to pay for lol)
Anyway - what is best for an engagement ring? whats traditional?
I always thought it had to be gold with a diamond. but noticed now theres plenty of alternate styles including silver, platinuum etc.
I've decided if i can get one with a pink sapphire in it, with diamonds around the outside, that will suit her style. jsut unsure if it should be a gold ring or platinuum,

EDIT: I've just thought of something else-you will have to take into consideration what her wedding ring will be made of as these rings will be sitting next to each other on her finger and don't want to clash. Also-some metals are harder than others, and the higher the carats in gold, the softer the gold, so you need the rings to be made of the same metal, otherwise the harder one could wear the metal of the softer one.
I was just going to say everything that you've said. Don't go for something so unusual that a suitable wedding ring will be impossible to get. I have a 9 carat engagement ring, so got a 9 carat wedding ring for the 'wearing down' reason too.
Did you read his opening post? His budget is £400.
helpful tip number 2 - ask her what she likes. If thats too obvious make up an excuse to go past a jewellers (pretend you need a new watch or something) and if she's thinking about getting engaged she is bound to look at the rings. Then you can casually ask her if she likes gold or white gold, diamoonds or coloured stones etc.
good luck!
Very, very wise words!
Also-think about a second hand/antique ring. You could get something really beautiful and a bit different for a lot less than you might think.
Thats the kind of ring i was thinking about. I was just unsure it might not be very 'engagement' like lol.
what ever you get what ever the price make it a speacial day and it is the meaning of it that counts

I like this one

Personally I don't like that at all. I tend to agree that it isn't very engagement like and the bright pink is a little tacky. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
Thats a lovely ring. Is she a 'pretty in pink' type of girl?
That's SO weird... I was just looking at that one! I really like it, and I think it's more important to buy one that you think she'll like, rather than one that looks engagment-y!
Thanks for the excuse to look at pretty rings anyway
You're so much more tactful than I.
so it all mainly depends on what suits! That ring you have described there sounds absolutely lovely.

Oh Pamela- I wish you were a man!
I have to say, Obiwan, Pam's choices are lovely as the plain diamonds are very classy and the styles wouldn't date
