Sure this will not go down well.

Sky has announced that the price of its television packages will increase just five weeks after paying a record £4.2m for rights to broadcast live coverage of the Premier League – despite claiming it would "work hard to minimise the impact of higher rights costs on customers".

Viewers who subscribe to the Sport bundle will see a £1 increase on their monthly bill to £47, while the Family bundle, which includes drama channel Sky Atlantic that has proven popular since its launch – will cost an extra £3 to £36 a month.

Sky usually announce their price increases in September, but the unseasonal increase will see the average cost of watching Sky TV go up by more than £2.50 a month from June.

Sure someone will be able to get the full link via other media sources.

Slightly off topic, but it really does make Now TV at £6.99 a month with no contract look like a good offering for the entertainment package. Even adding movies at a further £9.99 so £16.98 a month for 11 movie channels and 13 entertainment channels, plus catch up and box sets!

On topic though. It's disgusting the way they force you to take the basic channels first before you can add movies and sport, and making entertainment subscribers pay / subsidise the sports fans.

I'd quite hapilly pay £45 for the sport pack alone.

I abhor though having to pay for the family pack (to get the HD and sports) even though I only want the sport.

Sky is really looking incredibly poor value for money. How do they justify a 9% increase on the family bundle in less than a year when inflation is so low? It looks like they are using this to subsidise the ridiculous increase they're paying for EPL rights.

Sky need to be careful, more and more people will soon wake up to what a rip off their service is becoming. I subscribe to the NOW TV package, entertainment only but would never watch through a dish.

NOW will no doubt be increased, and I would assume by a greater percentage than for Sky; which will be a shame as those of us who tried it under the current lower subs may have liked it and be keen to sub again.

As for everyone on the basic channels, enjoy the increased prices to pay for something you ain't gonna watch. You know where your telephone is....

Not only that, how will fans of sports - but not football - like increased subs to watch thir rugby/golf/cricket etc? The sports bundle might *only* go up by a quid, but you have to pay for that basic package first. have Sky made a huge error with their bid for the football rights? If the momentum of people getting these bills and reducing or quitting (notice that if Sky increased sports but not the basic package, many may well just have quit the sports; but it's tailored so that's of no real benefit, much berrer to quit everything and face the wrath of your partner who wants the entertainment....) starts to build up, they're in trouble.

However - how to get cheap telly and cheap football - everyone leave Sky, they go under, there is a fire-sale for the TV series and football rights, so everything ends up on screen just the same as it was before but with a different company and cheaper :D

    Yep.

I am on a 50% off deal right now, when that ends I will be cancelling and letting them know exactly why I am cancelling.

Anything I watch can be obtained elsewhere for cheaper or free so I am no longer willing to fill millionaire footballers pockets.

Every football fan knows full well Sky went way over the top for the rights just to keep BT out, I really wonder know who came out the best.......your right not Sky!

I have Sky as well but like many others I wonder if the time is right to start seriously considering is it worth it as you cant get the Sports channels on their own.

Wouldn't mind betting if these rises don't make an impact we will see another hike come the New Year.

Me too. Although I won't be cancelling altogether.

The sports package is going for sure. The only reason I have it is for WWE, which Sky has cut back on this year. The sports I like can usually be found on Eurosport. The movie package is good, but I feel Netflix and Amazon Prime both offer better value for money. Especially when changing DNS.

Family package will be my limit soon.

Funny thing is, when i rang today to remove the voicemail from my account i got talking to the guy on the phone and he offered me quite a good deal for unlimited fibre broadband.

It would mean me ditching the TV package completely though and going Freesat & No Sky+ functionality, but i'd save £25 quid a month which would give me a lot of leeway to look at some online-based content providers.

Got a week to look in to the costings of it a lot more, but i'm tempted ...

Sadly, I think you're right and no doubt the entertainment package will soon be £9.99 as they won't want to make it too attractive compared to the satellite offering. It's a shame really as Now TV + Freesat HD / Freeview HD + Amazon / Netflix and a good speed internet connection is quite a good choice for those who don't want to spend a fortune on tv but want a little extra.

And I watch a lot of the classics from the BBC on YouTube so that makes up for the loss of Gold, Yesterday and Drama (I only have Freesat not Freeview)

What price is Netflix though? That must be their main competition for now tv. They couldn't price too much higher than Netflix

My expectation is Now TV will add a charge for full HD picture at some point this year, to try to have multiple price points. There is a new full HD now TV box on its way.

Basically the widest range of HD channels and locking the likes of E4 HD, ITV2 HD in pay packages and sport/movies/broadband keeps people subscribing.

Freeview is ever improving with new channels being added all the time. TruTV is quite new, Spike TV, Horror ect..5 years ago it was offering what 35 basic channels today it offers a good 50-60. If only cheaper broadband bundles were out there and BT offered better deals people may be tempted to go back to DTT only like the ITV Digital days.

The Family bundle looks bad value. If you simply subscribe to Sky with a SD box, no Sky+, ect which I guess many still do then it's very poor value.

Yes. I'm always amazed by how many do pay £70 per month. Especially football fans. Compared to match tickets and travel though it's relatively cheap.

The problem is though the movies and the Entertainment package are just there to subsidise the Sports costs.

Although im paying a little more for BT Infinity plus line rental and don't get as many channels as Sky. Its making BT TV with Youview seem a cheaper choice.
I could of payed more but I never take the Sky Movies bolt on with BT TV or the two Sky Sports channels and don't have the kids extra bolt on.
I can also use Netflix via my sister account.
Think shes paying something like £6.99 a month for Netflix.

We can always get things cheaper by doing 'dodgy dealings' like using other people's accounts!!

I still pay £5.99 for Netflix though the price increased a while ago, that gives me access to 1080p and 4k content. I think the going rate starts at £6.99 for HD and £8.99 for UHD.

Now TV has the advantage of Sky's popular channels like Sky 1, Atlantic and Fox for current series. £9.99 could still be seen as good value for money.

I see those with the family bundle are being hit hard, Sky are not even trying to hide the fact that those on family are subsidising the sports channels now.

Sports should have seen the three quid rise.

    Yup, me too.

To be honest I thought I was getting poor value before the price rises, hence cancelling in December and hence getting the 50% off offer.

Fully prepared to go to freesat, Sky without sport is dubious value, and personally I don't get to watch enough of the footy to pay full price for it (do watch all F1 race, but its not worth the Sky subs on its own given BBC show half the races anyway).

Either way someone's going to have to pay for Sky's over inflated price for Premiership football. Whether it's Sky Sports customers or just people who view the Multi Channels.

At the end of the day it is how badly you want to watch sport live or if you happy to watch the highlights on the mainstream broadcasters. I thought it would be too long before sky started to increase their prices though.

£5.99 do not get you 4k, it is a couple of quid more. I still get Netflix for £5.99 as well, give me 1080p and the use of netflix on two screens at a time.

Now TV is ok, it is pretty good for the money, but I find the picture quality is nowhere near to Netflix. I do find Now TV useful if #I see a film and think about watching it I can just dip in and out, ok it cost £9ish, but that is the same price as one evening at the cinema and I can use it for a whole month.

I have stop the entertainment package on Now as I find a lot of the stuff I can now get on Netflix, some way or another, well what I want to watch anyway.

The one good thing I like about now TV is I can use it without a TV licence if I do not watch the live stuff, the same with netflix. If paid Sky over inflated prices for their normal TV service i would have to buy a TV licence.
Crazy prices and it seems it is people who got the least money that pays them. Crazy people :)
