Any that would replace some on big money who do little more than read an auto-cue.

Another vote for Moira Stewart - calm, authoritative.

But of course, not dolly birdish enough for the BBC.

Yes...he's dead as is Reginald Bosanquet who is also mentioned. That would be one hell of a comeback though!

In seriousness, I remember Richard Whitmore, Richard Baker and Alastair Burnett from when I was child in the 70s/80s. Now they must all be an age so I guess they have retired from broadcasting.

Probably two decades too old as well seeing as allegedly the Beeb doesn't like seeing women over 55 presenting its shows. I am struggling to think of one actually (mustn't watch TV enough).

On another strand concerning Moira (which isn't my business really but someone mentioned it to me a while ago and I'm curious) is it true Pam St Clement is Moira's partner?

Firstly, because obviously, it would be pretty miraculous if she came back from the dead, and so that would be quite interesting. Secondly, because I used to fancy her (I'm assuming she would come back as she looked before death). Thirdly, so she could settle a decade-old argument ('was it George who topped you?').

Moira Stewart, Richard Baker, and Kenneth Kendal - as he was the *first!

For sheer character and entertainment value it would have to be Reggie Bosanquet. He and Sandy Gall were the classic News at Ten team. Anyone who doesn't remember his inimitable style, think of Henry in Drop The Dead Donkey. You'll get the idea.

I'd also put in a plea for Kenneth Kendall who was my favourite newsreader as a kid. Michael Aspel was pretty good too.

As a practical choice it would have to be Moira Stewart. Oddly sacked for being too old, yet who didn't seem to age a minute throughout her BBC career. Cool presentation and fantastic voice.

The newsreader I was most glad to see the back of was Alistair Burnett.

    Good call for Sue Lawley.

Jan Leeming was a bit nuts in I'm a celebrity.

Who remembers Peter Woods? Those were the days when you really didn't need to look good to be a newsreader.

That was a bit of an understatement! ;) But she used to be very composed and competent as I newsreader, I always thought. Her stint in the jungle was quite an eye opener. Especially the singing!
