What's the best way to listen to Jazz FM...

... in terms of sound quality?

Listening now via Apple TV, think it's 64kbps AAC. The sound has a nasty metallic treble, not all the time but it cuts in and out.

Is there a nicer-sounding stream or is this the best they offer?

They are, but at 80kbps mono.

Satellite feed via Astra is 128Kbps joint stereo. Sounds good fed through hi-fi unit.

You sure that's not just a bit of improv? 😉😀

If the Apple TV box is picking up the 56k AAC+ stream rather than the 128k stream, then the SBR component which recreates the higher frequencies may account for the occasional metallic sounds?
Guess the 24k stream is kept for mobile use? I remember once only the low bit rate stream was free to use and to get the Jazz FM higher bit rates, plus blue and red "*rooms" there was a monthly subscription, did not last long.

Assuming the Apple TV uses the same stream that's listed in iTunes, it's http://tx.sharp-stream.com/icecast.php?i=jazzfmmobile.aac

Pasting the stream URL into VLC, the statistics display says 23kbps. Looks like Jazz FM have given Apple the mobile stream. It makes no sense because iTunes is not an iPhone app (you use the Music app, which doesn't play radio streams, instead).
