So why is there an option for it under Contact Us?

Since changes of user names used to be permitted, presumably because no one's bothered to remove it.

I seem to recall that there was some sort of technical fault which prevented any future name changes.

Too much effort involved in other words. Other large forums manage it.

I don't get involved in a lot of chit chat, but there are posters I like. If they were to change their names how would I know they were still around?

On mumsnet I think they can change their names themselves without going through the mods.

I don't use mumsnet btw, but I have been know to browse on there from time to time:o

It's ok, you're amongst friends now. Just let it all out.

Search their posting history for posts you recognise, or ask then who they are? :D

I mod for a football club; we allow name changes on our forum.

If I don't get involved in much chat I'm not likely to want to do that. :D

It is similar to the fault with the shape shifting feature on the Tardis which stops it from looking like anything apart from a 1950s Police Phone box.

Fortunately for me, I got my name change in back in 2007 before they stopped allowing them :)

Don't understood that excuse, it takes five seconds to change a user's name via the vBulletin control panel.

They allowed me to change my original username to this one but that was back in 05/06.

I presume the mods must allow it in rare circumstances if there is a good reason for it.

I've read somewhere that with large forums like DS, it can put a massive strain on the system because of how much has to be updated in the forum databases, especially if the user has posted quite a lot on the forums.
