One thing about the balloon idents was that you actually saw the countryside from the air. The BBC could do some with aerial shots of the UK. Similar to what UTV does.

The date has been changed to 31st April. The BBC said callum_preciou had held them at gunpoint and ordered the relaunch so they had no option but to oblige him. I still like the balloon idents but accept that we won't ever be seeing them as BBC1's idents again.

Indeed, the little animations of January will be gone to ident heaven! Or at least put in the cupboard until next January!

Whatever they do - we cannot stop it! Just accept it.

I loved the BBC Globe (COW) in the old days!
I liked BBC 2's 'cube' and other varied ones.
ITV was regional - we had YTV and Tyne Tees - both were distinctive logos.
ITV also had that nice 'Generic' title in 1990(ish) with that catchy jingle, that turned into your local ITV regional ident.
Channel 4 had that colourful 'lego' style animation with catchy jingle.

Ohh I'm so nostalgic!! I miss those days......:)

Letters in Gill Sans Bold in the centre of the screen with no fancy graphics, white on a black background, would be sufficient for me for an ident. It would do what it was supposed to do adequately and efficiently.

Do we actually have confirmation that the current winter idents will be withdrawn this weekend or is it just an assumption? They could in theory continue through February as it's still very much winter for a few weeks yet!

And will the Ben Elton balloon idents from 1998 might return to used for comedy shows (for example: Room 101).

I predicted that if the Balloon pres comeback means they will have several film premieres for Easter or sooner:

    Lord of the Rings
King Kong (with an introduction from Peter Jackson)
    Night at the Museum 1&2
    The Golden Compass

Not just the Balloon idents will return this Spring but also new idents will introduced as well as the new logo (based on the minds of Francis Taylor) and new menu animation too.

It's just been announced; John Birt has become the new DG of the BBC and will bring back the much missed 5 minute self promo for the BBC in between programmes. A host of stars will sing U2's 'It's a Beautiful Day' on a giant BBC ONE Zeppelin. Sadly the ginormous cost involved has meant the closure of every other network apart from BBC ONE. To save money on announcers in vision continuity to be provided by Matt Baker live from The BBC Zeppelin. Also the News, Panorama, The One Show etc
