it would be "in the same spirit" as the old National Service, bringing together people from different backgrounds.
Em, it wasn't. It was so we would have enough people with guns

Good grief, what next - being able to have a debate in Parliament if you get 100,000 signatures on a petition

It sounds like a good idea to me. It will be something to do for all the teenagers who are bored in the summer holidays.

if it is voluntary, it will only reach the middle class kids etc anyway, because that hardcore lost youth group they are on about will not be encouraged by their parents to take part...and they'll prefer to hang around their estates.

As long as they get paid some money for it because they should not have to do unpaid work because they are young and have nothing to do - so then you get into the realms of it being a job and there are no jobs about so this ends up a nothing policy and just words to pander to the electorate.

It's voluntary though, so no one has to do it. And, most probably, no one will.

I'm not going off to a camp in the middle of nowhere for my summer, meet new people, I'd rather meet the friends I have in my home with my family. So Mr Cameron can get stuffed :p:cool:

I dont get it. What incentive is it, for us to go to these things?

I think it's a brilliant idea from an incisive political mind.

I mean, it's not like 16 year olds who have some spare time and want to give something to the community currently have any opportunity to do so.

I'm glad Mr Cameron has come up with this unique concept of work that you give up your time for unpaid.

Yes, I think this 'voluntary work' thing might catch on in the charity sector!

Fun, references, CV entries, life experience, friendships...

Not saying that you cannot get these elsewhere. I think that it's a good idea, but we already have these sorts of schemes. DoE, BB, Scouts... Also, I feel that anyone willing to get involved with this will already be doing some of the ones I mentioned before they are 16.

Good idea, teach them new skills, get them off the streets and out of bed

As long as it is purely voluntary then why not!

I do worry it could pave the way for a scheme to get people into enforced, unpaid community service type duties, though.

Community service criminals, the unemployed, now 16 year old kids. It is going to get mighty overcrowded out there, methinks.

I don't think it's aimed at the homeless.

    Haha, this made me giggle:D.

I think I might have to tell the charity I work for unpaid about this volunteer lark:p.

I was wondering if Cameron was serious about this idea because he was raving about it a couple of years ago but has been very quiet about it since then.

I'm actually in favour of the scheme. What harm can it do? I just question whether it will ever materialise. The cynic in me says it's just yet more electioneering.
