Volume question

Hi all
Got a new 46" Samsung Plasama with sound bar and sub woofer. Yay me.
I've had this "issue" in the past as well but wanted to check if it was something I'm doing wrong?
I watched a movie last night and set the sound to 10 out of 30.
Perfect volume. However, during some parts of the movie, like an action scene, the volume really ramped up - no doubt to emphasize the scene.
Thing is, it was too loud, plus I'm concious of neighbours as their lounge is on the wall next to ours.
So I had to turn the sound down to 7. Then the action scene was over and I could not hear much.
Back up to 10. Fine.
Then another action scene. Too loud! Down to 7!
Did this throughout the movie
Am I doomed to watch all movies with the sound remote in my hand?

I wouldn't have thought having the volume at 10/30 would have produce extreme DB levels that it would have disturbed the neighbours - unless you have paper thin walls.
Just checked the volume again, its goes up to 50!
I will look into the options you suggest too - thank you
I'm going to be un-manlike and ready the manuals tonight
Thanks
You can't hear the dialogue, but the action scenes burst your ear drums, so you're constantly adjusting the volume setting
Exactly!
If I lived in a detached house with neighbours at least 250 yards away then I would not care too much. Although the louder scenes really are some times too loud.
Watch the movie with the remote on my lap, ready to turn up and down when needed. Stupid!
Home cinema should be about realism, action sequences should be much louder than dialogue, but not to the point of bursting eardrums, having such a discrepancy in volume suggests to me the system has not been calibrated correctly.
If all channels have been calibrated correctly then you should be able to adjust the volume so dialogue is easily audible, then when the action scenes cut in they give the wow factor, but not to the extent of bursting eardrums.
A few things you can do to improve matters, make sure the system is calibrated, enable night mode if present on the system, or manually turn up the center channel by a couple of db and turn down the other channels/sub by a couple of db.
No, he's talking about a decent 5.1 system, where each of the six channels is individually adjustable.
I know.
I wasn't. I was talking about a regular television set.
I doubt it too, I assumed you were referring to a dedicated 5.1 system when you mentioned eardrums being burst, not a TV.
But yeah, it is irritating when they do this on films. I woke my everyone up in my house, late the other night because of it
But if it does what I think it does it might apply a bit of dynamic range compression or mild AGC effect to even out the level differences between the quiet and loud bits.
Anyway, will test it out soon and report back
BTW, this is the sound bar I bought with the new telly, it has quite amzing sound and volume!

If you are referring to the EQ (equaliser) button then I'm afraid this feature will not help your situation, this is basically a dsp feature, it mimics the acoustics of rock, pop jazz. Doesn't look like there is anything you can manually enable to help you on this system.
If you get on well with your neighbours just ask them if your system is intrusive when you're watching these types of films, at least you'll have an idea how loud you can have it, you may be surprised how loud that is before they start banging on the wall.
