One minute he was at Euro 2012 playing every match, then he captained his country, then he disappeared almost overnight from the whole England set up. Why?

Because other players have come through and overtaken him.

    darren bent killed him

Benty doesn't like it when other ex-Charlton players outshine him

Injury finished him off for England and Tottenham. Never the same after.

Always gave his everything but never good enough.

Too slow and led a merry dance by technically more gifted players.

AVB realised he's a hard-working player but one with a very limited skill set.

    I miss his multi-point turns.

I think his influence has been underrated. Look how many people in and out of football have that tight short back and sides look nowadays.

Never really came back from his long injury lay off last season, and at his age, he is not going to get better now.

Dembele has taken over that role, but loses the ball more.

What is Dembele's actual position? I always had him pegged as a forward.

Scott Parker is 33 and has no future international prospects. He was unlucky enough to be a contemporary of Lampard and Gerrard so his career always was going to be a bit part for England. Also in his formative years Paul Scholes was strutting his stuff.

He played more attacking with Fulham than he does at Spurs right? It's possible I'm just thinking of someone else entirely too.

Might as well ask why Bobby Charlton isn't still playing for England. People get old and as you age your skills as a footballer tend to degrade rather.

Still can't believe he was voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers in a year he captained his side to 20th place.

Because he played well throughout the season, despite that.

Ginola won the award in a poor Spurs team for the same reason.

I thought the Ginola one was due to the fact Man United had so many top players that season (Treble winning) and they couldn't choose between them so went for Ginola instead?

Him and Gareth Barry were both extremely overrated.

He was a decent enough DM or holding player. He tackled hard and worked his socks off, but there wasn't a great deal more to his game. Sometimes that's all you need from a player if he's surrounded by other talent, but he was never true international class.

If memory serves, he actually played as an emergency centre-forward or definitely an AM for a good while at Fulham.

Have to agree. At Charlton he looked like the next Bryan Robson, then came the Chelsea move and he struggled to get in the team and then he get injured and was never quite as dynamic again. Could still win the ball well but his distribution went to pot. Also, something about that hairstyle of his just screamed English Defence League, or is that just me :).

If I remember correctly, Pee was quite a big fan of him at Spurs.
