For all the focus on them, no returnees made the final 12?!

Does anyone else find it very bizarre that they devoted so much time in the auditions on contestants who were returning to the show after missing out in the past, but now after Judge's Houses absolutely none of them actually ended up making it?
Melanie McCabe, Jade Richards, Joseph Wheelan, Amy Mottram and Steph Woods all got shown a lot but ultimately none of them are through. I'd have put money on at least one of them being in the live shows, but that's not the case.
It just begs the question, were the rest of the eliminated contestants that bad that they had to resort to showing returnees who didn't make it to fill the time? Apart from one or two others, (Giles, Paul for example) virtually all of the prominent rejects had already been on the show before..
