What movies are good for the soul?... the obvious choice is "It's A Wonderful Life", but what others are there?

For me, I think it has to be "The Colour Purple"

Love Actually. Cheesy, I know but it reminds me of everything good about the British.

The Worlds Fastest Indian, which was on TV this afternoon.

Saw this a couple of years ago, and it's a very uplifting, heartwarming if somewhat old-fashioned story.

Anthony Hopkins played a guy called Burt Munro , an elderly New Zealand man who built his own motorbike from scratch and used to race it in the deserts of NZ.

He hears about the land speed record trials at Bonneville Flats in Utah in the US, and decides to make the journey there to enter his bike in competition...despite the fact that his bike is hand-built and 40 years old, he is in his sixties and has a bad heart, and he no idea of how to even get to the US.

It's a great underdog story, a tale of triumph over adversity. Munro is a very simple man, not used to the ways of the world outside of his own little town in NZ. And though likeable he can be difficult and obstinate.

What holds it together is Hopkins performance - it's very rare to see an actor able to play an ordinary person in a very down-to-earth way, and he makes him appear very charismatic but in a very low-key manner.

You just can't help but like the character, and it's fascinating to see how he manages to overcome all the odds with his rickety old bike.

Highly recommended if you like movies that make you feel good and warm inside.
