Have you ever been to Chiswick because your descriptions of the place is different to the reality. Yes, there are parts of Chiswick that are predominantly white but there are also areas where the population is more mixed. It's also incorrect to suggest that Chiswick is exclusively affluent and middle class as there is a significant amount of social housing in the area. You don't know which part of Chiswick that James O'Brien lives in so your comments are just pure speculation to fit in with your regular anti-James O'Brien narrative.

Yes, I am sure that Brian lives in an area of high social housing and not in the more affluent part of Chiswick. Chiswick is 85% a white enclave.

What's the percentage for Blackheath, Twickenham, Hampstead and Putney?

This statement is without basis. I live in Harrow, the very definition of London suburbia and I think I have a very good understanding of "real London" because Harrow is real London. What is your understanding of what is "real London"?

    - Personally ,somewhere actually in London with a London postal code.

    Nick Ferrari lives in Blackheath.
    Stewie lives in Twickenham.
Nick Abbot lives in Putney (or he certainly used to).

I would consider these 3 London locations at least the equal of Chiswick.

Ferrari is a self-proclaimed Murdochite, Steve Allen is a barmy, I'm afraid ladies and gentlemen. Neither of these presenters are fighting some sort of bizarre champagne socialist class war from a public school perspective while living in such an area. I fail to see where the 'disconnect', as Brian would say, is with these points.

I talked to him only last month, outside The Bell And Crown, a lovely riverside pub, owned by Fullers, a Chiswick brewery, upholding the London tradition of brewing, unlike Youngs who sold up and is now brewed in Bedfordshire.

EDIT: Actually, as I headed to The City Barge, an Asian man and his two children passed me along the towpath. Later, I saw him with (presumably), his wife, who was also Asian.

That makes 5, count 'em, yes five, non white persons of Chiswick, seen within just one evening.

I remember that Youngs brewery in Wandsworth .Never knew it closed down -that's a shame

    Sounds a busy evening :)

There is no "disconnect" with having left-leaning views and living in Chiswick or maybe I skipped that chapter when I read Das Kapital.

Many years ago I lived in both Hampstead and Blackheath. People seem to think you live in splendid isolation where your house is, but I can promise you I knew exactly what Lewisham, Catford, Belsize Park, Camden and Kilburn were like.

But in the rather down-market, Lewisham side of Blackheath rather than the leafier, Greenwich side. ;-)

Back in the 70's there were 28 Youngs pubs in close proximity to the brewery. There was an unofficial competition [much like the Circle Line dash] of having a half of Youngs Special in each of these pubs between the then opening hours of 1100 to 1500. I managed to complete it once, but have no memory of the last few pubs or the bus ride home!

It shut a few years ago, probably when Youngs were offered £11 million for the site.
They sold up. Can you guess what's coming?

I was once on my way to a job interview in Putney. I had to cross the road by a Youngs pub. I stopped to cross, but could hear a 'clip clop' sound. I had an idea what was coming, so I waited and there it was. A dray, drawn by two fabulous Youngs Shier horses, delivering beer to the pub. Now that's "real London" right there in Putney.

Is Greater London not part of "real" London then?

Good job I've dined at Ossie's Cafe.

Wow, what an utterly insensitive and deluded post - worthy of Steve Allen himself. I'm amazed. A man with a British / London accent appears to be involved in this atrocity and you think Ferrari is "making a meal of it". Unbelievable. Whatever the rights and wrongs are in the whole situation, this is certainly going to make things worse both there and in the UK.

I think perhaps the point GS is making is to question the necessity of playing the audio from a video clip that many of us had made a conscious decision not to watch.

I am at a loss to understand what he thought it added to the argument? No one is disputing the possibly huge ramifications of the deed and there is every reason to discuss it, but the audio didn't lend anything to the discussion other than shock and distress. Personally i feel that it is disrespectful to the victim and his family to even put the video on the website let alone play the audio in case we hadn't watched it.

We turned off, and didn't turn back on. I felt this was a serious error of judgement on his part.

It worked well in W7 too, where I lived for a while.
Gurney-slade will confirm it's not the prettiest of postcodes in that area.

I really hope this doesn't sound rude as I hold you in the highest esteem as a poster, but I fail to understand why, (like Brian), you simply don't understand.

I have lived in a very multi-cultural area for all my life (apart from 1 year). The area has been enriched by immigrants for many, many years - I choose to live with a wide variety of nationalities. It suits me. But, I am not the one who calls anyone with concerns about immigration a racist. Brian does this while living in an 85% white area. He is spouting pompously from his ivory tower with no real understanding of London and how it works outside his so-called "Liberal elite" bubble.
Wrong. JO'B has lived in London for well over a decade. So I reckon he's got a fairly good idea and feel for what it's like to live in London. Anyone would over that period. I strongly suspect that you do not choose to live in a multi-cultural area. You do so because you do not have the choice, unlike Mr JO'B who does. And that is what really gets under your skin, n'est ce pas?

An 11 million which is probably now worth considerably more .Ah the benefit of hindsight...

Ah yes - I remember those Youngs Shire horses

Did you know that they stopped the Shire horses because at times, motorists were getting out of their cars and attacking the horses, as they were making them late for work on the roads.

Hmmm, person or horse, angry 10 stone person, or 2 hulking Shire horses. I know which one(s) my money's on.

    .

Well if you don't live in the CIty or City of Westminster - then everyone else all lives in Great London .The question is when does Greater London start becoming home county suburbia .Middle sex ,being a defunct administrative county is debateable from both sides I suppose.Personally I go by postcodes as a determining factor - but perhaps they're getting obsolete...

The only debate when choosing accommodation in my day was whether you had Inner London Weighting, or Outer. There was quite a difference in the 70's - at least a pound a month :)

When I started working in the late 80s. I got Outer London Weighting.

That was for a job in Teddington, TW, Middlesex, Greater London. Take your pick as to what you'd call it today.
