I don't think that was the only reason. It also had a very good theme tune (Adele) which helped and there was a lot of positive word of mouth reviews. It's a very good Bond film imho. One of the best of recent times.

Yet a lot of old school Bond fans don't seem to like it at all, which always puzzled me.

This looks very good. I really liked Skyfall, I thought it was a great entry. I especially loved the neat ending, when Bond is introduced to Miss Moneypenny, goes into the office through the familiar red leather doors, and "M", the new "M", says to him "Well 007, lots to be done. Are you ready to get back to work?" to the bars of the Bond theme. Brilliant.

This has to be his last and Daniel Craig looks very aged in this one

according to empire, he is signed for one more, after spectre

In terms of years Daniel Craig has now beaten Piece Brosnan and equalled Sean Connery. Brosnan played Bond for seven years and Connery for nine years (not counting Never Say Never Again) . But they made more films in those years. IF he plays the role for four more years he will beat Roger Moore and be the longest serving Bond ever. But still with fewer films. At 47 he is still the right side of 50. The trouble is they have such huge gaps between films now. It used to be every two years but now its three or even four years. When Quantum Of Solace came out after two years I was hoping it was back to a new film every two years but then it was four year gap to Skyfall and now a three year gap to Spectre. I expect it will be another three years to wait until the next one. That will be 2018. DC may quit at that point. So that will be five films over 12 years which will equal Roger Moore in years but not number of films.

it could go back to two I think, Skyfall was delayed owing to financial problems MGM were having( which as i recall also pushed back The Hobbit start date)

though with Spectre, Wilson and Broccoli elected to wait, for Mendes who was busy with stage commitments

I loved Skyfall too and yeah it is one of the best Bond films. But I don't think it was a radical game changer of the franchise but just another excellent addition. Skyfall made a whopping $400 million more than either Casino Royale and QoS (CR at the time was regarded as the best Bond film). And that was without 3D. It's the highest grossing film in UK history (beating Avatar) and I think that was due to the whole cultural plugging of all things Bond for an entire year. But yeah, Adele's theme was huge so that would've helped too.
