Is this a cult? Anyway, I've just watched Season 1 - any diehard fans out there? Are you supposed to have some empathy with the mafia guys? I know you see the families and Tony's therapist so you see them as having problems, and I love the way James Gandolfino plays his character, but I just want dont care about them enough as people and want them all to pay for their crimes.

If you mean cult as in relative to this part of the forums, you should be okay as I am sure it covers US shows in general too.
I love the Sopranos and have all of the boxsets. Whether you feel for the mafia families or not is something you will decide in time, if you stick with it. There are moments where I found myself begging for Tony's form of justice, which probably isn't a good thing to admit in public.;)
I'm trying to keep this spoiler free for the OP's benefit, but the fact is though, it's open to interpretation, and for every one person who thinks it ended a certain way, there's another who thinks it ended completely differently. And although a small part of me would love to see more of it, I think it's probably for the best if they dont do a movie. It almost certainly wouldnt live up to the weight of peoples expectations.
I know what you mean about the ending it can be taken, loads of different ways, supposedly the film would be a prequel anyway
The great thing about Sopranos is that it didn't tell you how to feel about characters. it left that up to you. It didn't have good guys and bad guys, it had people some of whom did bad things, but they also did good things.
It credited the viewer with a degree of intelligence. For instance there was never a "Previously on Sopranos..." bit at the start of the show, you had to pay attention and know what was going on.
The same with the ending, it did not clear things up and the end and tie a bow around it for the viewer.
Great stuff.
One thing I also love about the show is its soundtrack. Was going through my Ipod the other day, and I didnt realise just how heavily this show has influence my music collection over the last few years. Has anyone else found this?
And the use of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' over the final scene = genius.
As for the original topic, you do feel empathy for these guys. Some more than others (it's a lot easier to empathise with Bobby Baccalieri than with Ralph Cifaretto, for example). But, I think the show constantly reminds you that even the "nice" mobsters are still mobsters. Every once in a while they'll have a character do something morally reprehensible, to make sure you're not feeling too much sympathy for him or her.
The most sympathetic characters all seem to be women (Carmella, Adriana, Dr. Melfi, Meadow). At least that's what I get from the show.
but then i guess she loved the guy!!:)
But I have to say, they left it wide open.
Will we see a return? who knows.
For me, it was one of the greatest series ever. Brutal, tragic, comic and addictive.
I hated some of the really obvious product placements 'Is that the new Porsche Cayenne?' etc but I forgave them for those because of the quality of the rest of it.
Some of the greatest characters ever invented. ie. Tony himself, and Paulie 'Walnuts' etc
Sometimes it spun off on tangents I didn't want it to go but that was only because I cherished it and didn't want it spoiling.
I also loved the ending.
I might go back now and watch it from the start and see how many namedrops there are. Any excuse to watch it again and it's been a while.
Ehh madon.
best show ever for sure but i was frustrated by the ending......left open for a future movie me thinks:)
Quality TV Viewing. I tried really hard to get into whilst it was on TV but something always stopped me.
Glad I watched it when it has finished. As the suspense was way to much:D
The ending was frustrating for me, but, I have read a few theories, and the ending has made much more sense.
Personally, due to a few of those theores,, I cant see a movie or another series panning out, I would like to see a spin off, of AJ in his twenties though:D
LOL I never saw your post, before posting mine. I too was frustrated by the end:D
great minds eh?:D
LOL, yep if you say so;):p:D
Definitely a Marmite ending.
I had just based the ending on the conversation he had with Bobby at the lake side and I just thought WOW.
I've also done the same as Harry Barry and watched whole series back to back, it's like having a 13 hour film.
Great stuff.
i missed this when it was on our screens but hired the boxsets from blockbuster and watched the whole lot over a couple of weeks.....
one scene that will live with me as being one of the funniest was when christopher had his AA/narcotics meeting where he had to apologise to the assembled group for hurt he'd caused them.....after he called his mother a **** the whole thing dissolved into a free for all!!:D great stuff
on another note though i was dissappointed they never resolved the Melfi rape aftermath.
I was/am a Silvio man myself... what a dude.
James Gandolfo was gold and rightly won an Emmy or two, I recall!
Edie Falco (Carmela Soprano) from OZ to The Sopranos... what a transition!
So many greatc characters... 'Pussy' was brill! So many memories... I think I need to watch it all over again!
