There is a very thoughtful review of the book in the latest Private Eye. It would have been easy for them to just lampoon her or do a spoof but the reviewer mainly addresses how seriously troubled Liz is and the duty of care or lack of it from the DM and Paul Dacre in particular. I think the publication of this book has been a whopping own goal for Liz and the DM. It was clearly meant to attract admiration for her percieved career achievements against the odds and dealing with so many personal demons but it's not just made her a laughing stock it's finally done the 'Emperors's New Clothes' trick of revealing what is actually underneath all the designer tat and cosmetic surgery and it is no laughing matter. And yet, it is impossible to feel an ounce of sympathy for her - unless Astor can englighten us?

Brilliant post - I agree with every word.

The book has also been a disaster of Titanic proportions for Simon & Schuster - a week after publication it's #948 in the AmazonUK listings. Patently, not everyone wanted to read it. hardly anyone, in fact. Mind, I did see it at #17 yesterday... in Smiths.

    There's only one word: remaindered.

Wonder what the advance was. The commissioning editor must feel a bit of an eejit.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/jul/10/liz-jones-girl-least-likely-review

This article is excellent and concurs with my suggestions of Jones' fabrication of events just for something to write about, being a fantasist, disliking women (and therefore herself as one), disliking men only marginally less (!), being stupidly extravagant with money she may or may not have, inventing the current boyfriend, wallowing in self-pity, trying to buy love.....etc. What precisely would any man see in her? She cannot stand to be touched, remember. Perhaps a male poster would care to list any attributes as I, for one, cannot see any.

    Ummmmmmmmmmmm...

    Errr...

    Well...

She loves anim... no, wait, pretty much every animal she adopts either dies, contracts a life-threatening illness or develops severe behavioral problems.

    Errrrrrrrrrrrr...

    Nope, can't think of one.

She's not trodden the Sapphic path yet...

    Please god, no

Thanks to all for the Suzanne Moore and Eye links/posts above. Breath of fresh air. I read another mainstream paper review of book which basically said (paraphrase) 'candid', 'funny', and I wanted to scream: are you mad? None of the above. But I understand journalists/columnists (there is a distinction) may not want to dump on 'one of their own', so kudos to Moore.

Yet she tries to convince everyone she is all of this, and so much better than the rest of us mere mortals are at it.

She tries to get people to think of her as this spiritual mother earth type of person when, like you say, she is the exact opposite.

Her ramblings have become so predictably boring there is not even any point-and-laugh value to them any more. Time for the Mail to find someone else to take over the mantel of resident troll as Jones has become so stale you can smell it.

Katie Hopkins is seemingly vying to be employed by the Fail...

Interesting - Jones claims she was given the steroid Progesterone for her anorexia, and that was what gave her massive hooters. Aside from the fact that it's not a steroid but a steroid hormone, these are the recognised side effects (emphasis mine):

    headache
    breast tenderness or pain
    upset stomach
    vomiting
    diarrhea
    constipation
    tiredness
    muscle, joint, or bone pain
    mood swings
    irritability
    excessive worrying

    runny nose
    sneezing
    cough
    vaginal discharge
    problems urinating

Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:

    breast lumps
    migraine headache
    severe dizziness or faintness
    slow or difficult speech
weakness or numbness of an arm or leg
lack of coordination or loss of balance
    shortness of breath
    fast heartbeat
    sharp chest pain
    coughing up blood
    leg swelling or pain
loss of vision or blurred vision
    bulging eyes
    double vision
    unexpected vaginal bleeding
shaking hands that you cannot control
    seizures
    stomach pain or swelling
    depression
    hives
    skin rash
    itching
    difficulty breathing or swallowing
swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
    hoarseness

Nowhere do I see "sudden expansion of norks". You also have to wonder why she didn't go back to the hospital, wave them in the specialist's face and ask what the hell was going on. Unless, of course... it never happened.

How lovely that you have taken the time to mention her anorexia, share some hugely important and vital information about the side effects of Progesterone and throw in an elegant comment about her "massive hooters". Delightful.

My point was - and that list came from a medical website - a suddenly enlarged chest is not a recognised side effect (common or otherwise) of being prescribed the medication she says she was taking. Given that she routinely refers to others in highly derogatory terms (toothless, special needs, feral), I was just slipping into the idiom. You may have noticed she's also endlessly banging on about her own anorexia (borderline, recovering, you choose) yet, as has been noted here and elsewhere, she must be the only anorexic known to science with chunky thighs and incipient bingo wings.

Also, no comment on her plagiarizing others words and passing them off as her own ? Surely you're not tacitly condoning such a disreputable action ?

She's even worse. At least with LJ I am never quite sure whether it's all an act or if she is a truly bizarre person. With KH there is no mystery there at all an only a complete thicko would fall for anything she says or does. :o

Well from personal experience not,my GP gave me about half a dozen hormonal drugs before dragging my mum in to get permission for the pill.Still didn't give me boobs.:p

I think she insults people with anorexia, they have problems and struggle to gain weight. This person is a compulsive dieter,to fit her clothes. Entirely different.

Shall we play a quick round of Guess What Liz Will Do Next? Hmm. Well, let's see, she usually responds to criticism and negative feedback by cranking up the sympathy-seeking stories. So, since her book has been such a disaster, I'm guessing we can expect to see a whole spate of sick animals, dying animals, intrusive details about the illness and bereavement of family members, bleating about bad treatment from her sisters, rehashing of various poor-me stories including Stood Up On Milennium Eve, Neighbours Shot At My Letterbox, Cheating Ex Husband, and of course, let's not forget the financial hardship and massive debts, interspersed with details of expensive purchases.

Throw in some tales of past slights and upsets which will have dramatically increased in drama and grimness since the original telling, a few whinges about not getting a pony as a youngster, some passive-aggressive "poor me" stuff about buying her sister a cottage, and another truckload of sick animal tales to round the whole thing off. There! That will teach the book-buying (or in this case not buying) public to be so rotten and cruel and beastly!

:) ....How many did I guess correctly? :)

She's venturing quite deeply into sister bashing territory and appears to be inching away from the FRS thing. It's rather nasty but then what's new?

Ms Hopkins seems to be giving her a run for her money and Daily Heil column inches. Perhaps she's feeling the pressure and is upping her 'nasty game' ?

What will it take until her sister takes legal action about the 'bullying' claims? No doubt she is on Liz's payroll but can it really be worth it to allow herself and her family to be degraded like this? The sister would surely know if the RS was real or not, she could threaten to reveal the truth if this continues. I fear she is probably on the payroll and like Liz is allowing her life to be used - at a price.

I must admit I do feel a bit sorry for Liz this time. (only a teeny weent bit mind you)

Having had to put up with bullying by a family member growing up for many a year, including things being thrown, rages, being shouted at right in my face for sometimes 30 minutes, being made to feel bad I actually understand what Liz is writing about concerning her sister and have been in a somewhat similar situation.

Bullying at home or by family members is kind of still not really believed.

Being bullied at school/ work? "OMG! Report them NOW! That's TERRIBLE"
Being bullied by a sibling/ parent/ relative? "Oh they didn't mean it" "What did you do/ say now to upset them?" "It's just a phase/ they have had a bad day".

So from that point I can totally get what she is writing about. Everything is her usual whiney "poor me" dog poo rubbish.

I have massive sympathy for any genuine victim of bullying (I had a similar experience to you, Badcat, (thankfully a very long time ago--I hope your unpleasant experience is well behind you too). And I agree that bullying from family members is in many ways the worst kind. But having seen how Liz relentlessly bullies her sisters in print, missing no opportunity to stick the knife in, repeatedly snipe about past conflicts (about which they are in no position to defend themselves) and spill their deeply private business to the nation, I too would very much like to hear the other side of the story. After all, the worst type of bully is the one who pretends to be a victim.

And how many times is she going to use the ridiculous defence that she "didn't identify" the person she's written about and they shouldn't object because she kept it anonymous? It's a hugely disingenuous defence and doesn't stand up at all when you look at the whole picture. She may not have specifically identified the person within that one piece. But because she returns to pick the same scabs over and over again, she regularly writes two or three pieces in quick succession giving different clues each time, which make it blindingly obvious who she's referring to.

So, if, say, in week 1, I write about "buying my niece an aardvark.," Then in week 2 I refer to "being bullied by a woman who I'd let into my house with her daughter", and in week 3 I refer to "being bullied by someone even though I bought her daughter an aardvark," then you don't have to be Inspector Morse to grasp the full picture of who I'm on about. Liz does this time and time again, dropping in a different set of little details each time which give a clear overall picture....and then she claims she kept it anonymous so she doesn't understand why the person is upset.

ETA: Also, am I right in thinking that nothing has actually happened in the Diary this week, and she has simply used her diary to rehash a poor-me grievance she already trotted out in the MoS column a couple of weeks ago, using the exact same device of linking Nigella Lawson's domestic abuse experience to her own contretemps with This Person? Wasn't it almost word-for-word the same whinge, but in the paper instead of the Diary? Doesn't she realise that readers read both?

Yes cathrin, also she specifically names her sister Sue throughout her latest 'book' as being the main reason for all her problems and inadequacies/insecurities.

Hi i am a longtime lurker on this thread. I have been fascinated by la Jones since the nirpal years.

My personal opinion is that she's a very damaged woman and she is unlovable because she can't love herself.
I guess my fascination comes from not being able to believe that someone could be so openly blind to their own shortcomings.

My own mother is cut from the same cloth but without the glamour or the money so her life is even more sorry than LJ!

i would love to be able to share more with you on the other social network. please cld somebody link me to it? if there is anything I need to do I will do it, my usual online stalking methods have run dry, I crave more info and joining in with salacious gossip! thanks so much, much appreciated.
