Ideas for making friends

I've travelled a lot in the past which means my friends are all scattered around the world. Now that I've settled down, I feel that I only have a few good friends who live locally and I'm kinda lonely and I want to make more friends and widen my social circle a bit.

But how to do this?

I've signed myself up for an evening class at college that begins next month so I'm hoping that will kill two birds with one stone and I might make some new friends there.

I found a website called okcupid which, although mainly for dating, seems alright and I've started a few conversations with some people on there. Other websites all seem to charge money for their services.

What else can I do?

You just talk to people, wherever you are.

your in a shop, pub, club, evening class, college, bus stop, wherever....

if somebody you like the personality of, talks to you, then chat back.

    get into a talkative state.

Well now you should start a thread and invite everyone on DS who is in Scotland to go in it. Maybe someone here lives near you.

I'm quite a chatty person already but chatting to people on the bus, in shops etc, doesn't really lead to a decent friendship - or hasn't in my experience so far.

Ah yes. but thats the beauty of it.

when you have run out of things to say, and dont know what to say, you end it, by saying something like:

    'must dash, here's my card'

(and your card has your mobile number and email details on it)

    say something like 'call me'

that way, the person has your details and can contact you whenever.

    WTF LOL!

Give someone a card that you chatted too on the bus, just no.

Anyway, the usual DS advice for making friends is "Join a book club"! Have fun.

It's a nice idea but I don't think that would work in real life...

That is probably quite a good idea. I need to try and track down a local book group.

nobody carries cards with their name and number on it unless its a business card:confused:
if someone gave me a card on the bus with their name and number on after ending a pointless conversation with the words "must dash" Id throw it out of the window

I think I definitely wouldn't call someone who gave me a card after a short conversation. It would be all too bizarre:confused:

I just leave mine in phoneboxes and write my phone number on the wall of public toilets, it's a winner! ;)

I think Rob asked how to make friends a few months back, so that might explain something.

Rob - dont do that, although it would be quite funny, please go to http://www.vistaprint.com and make some cheap ones and tell us how you get on!

I fail to see whats funny and weird about you giving someone your card.

it shows you have got the balls to give your number out.

how else are they supposed to contact you, unless they have your details?

has anyone ever ever really called you as a result of one of these cards and that call lead to you meeting a decent friend?

    really

But if you fancy someone, and your 5 minute chat in the street/pub/shop/collge went well, and you want to chat further........

the only option is you give them you card with your details on......

it's either that - or you never see them again?

So again, how successful has this technique been for you to date? Also, aren't you currently unemployed? If so, what exactly would be on the 'business card' as you are not working for a business?

    Thanks for seeing my point.
