My new HP laptop only has one audio jack. I'm trying to connect to a cassette recorder to convert some old cassettes to mp3.The jack works fine as a headphone socket but doesn't recognise line in.There's a symbol for headphones and mike on the jack.

My HP laptop is the same. There is no line in on it. Therefore no way to connect your cassette machine to it directly. The mic input is no good. It is mono for a start off and mic inputs have far more amplification than line inputs to accommodate the very low output of a mic. If you were to connect a line level source to it you will overload it and just produce distortion.
The only solution is a USB sound card with line input, for example

I have used a very similar model to the above and found it gives very good results.
