Very wide range from late 70s to now but preferably bands to solo artists .

My favourite genre right now I think you call it Modern Rock , proper rock bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Mallory Knox, You Me At Six, Lower Than Atlantis basically Kerrang music that isn't heavy metal.

Still but teary with the split of We Are The Ocean yesterday ,they used to be screamo but are now a melodic rock band that Radio 1 play.

Metal especially Thrash & Symphonic, 80's chart. My parents listened to things like Carpenters, Showwaddywaddy, Chas n Dave, 50's / 60's & Country etc, so I have a lot of guilty pleasures as well.

I was born in the 1970s, so my favourite decades for music are obviously the 1970s and 1980s. I like most music from these decades, because this is the music that I grew up with. Some of these older songs carry a lot of memories for me. Mind you, my mum and dad both loved 1950s rock n roll and 1960s music, so I was brought up on that as well and I also like a lot of those songs too. I absolutely detest 1990s music onwards, though. The 1990s was the era where decent music rapidly went downhill for me and I don't think it has ever recovered. I can honestly say that I can only think of a very few songs from 1990 until now that I really like. I don't dislike any particular genre enough to say that I hate it and I think that every genre has its good and bad songs. Apart from 1990s crap, of course, lol. I was never into rap, dance, hip-hop or rave music, despite growing up in the 1990s. That was never my scene. My tastes have developed as I have grown older but I still like most of the same stuff now that I did when I was younger. My love for 1970s and 1980s pop music will never die!

Predominantly anything and everything that sounds good to my ears that has good vocals/singing, instrumentation/musicianship. With that being said for me it preferably covers Rock, Metal, Country, R&B, Soul, Reggae, Pop and Classical.

I'm fine with most decades (especially 70's onwards) my favourite type of Music is Rock Music and it had a great reign in the 00's along with Indie (another genre which I really like) which solidifies the 00's as my favourite decade.

Although I think that the 80's and 90's were the best for pure Pop Music.

I like mostly contemporary underground bands, I take the time to find what I like and not bitch about how terrible modern music is. Because it isn't. 2016 was my favourite year.

    A taste of what I dig;

    Indie pop
    https://soundcloud.com/thatbandofhers/marcel

    Shoegaze
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Th2Hm_dWow

    Dream pop
    https://vivienneeastwood.bandcamp.com/track/nons

    Surf rock
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T5_ZeLciRw

I do like some pure pop stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPmQZt6nq-8

    I've always been into synthpop and electronic music, a particular favourite at the moment;
    Roosevelt - Belong

    I couldn't give genres to these but they're awesome;

Tacocat - I Hate the Weekend
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcNotrB0s4Y

    Girl Ray - Trouble
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j07UM7wTLQ

Choir of Young Believers - Does It Look As If I Care
    https://soundcloud.com/ghostly/choir-of-young-believers-does-it-look-as-if-i-care

Geowulf - Don't Talk About You
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EqSmApWtIc

    Dream Wife - Hey Heartbreaker
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdZBvE7nZyM

I could be here all day.

yeah.... the point is you shouldnt have to 'take time to find out', it should be there being so interesting there is a buzz about it amongst the younger generation that spills out into mainstream. it gets noticed by more then just its target fan base. all the great genres of the past did this.

and, as ever, the 'best' music has always been more 'underground' , nothing new there.

until i see evidence that 2016 will go down as a great year in music, you will not convince me that it was anything other then generic, corporate driven, unoriginal crap.

I like a bit everything - John Peel taught me well.

I can go for a bit a classical, followed by Metal, then some of what 6 Music plays and then off to Jack FM to relive my younger days, currently listening to Nemone's house show. I also like show tunes, reggae. Even hymns are good musically.

I cannot understand why someone won't listen to or enjoy any type of music.

Although I will draw the line at Coldplay.

My Top Three bands of all time (based on plays by me):
    1) Super Furry Animals
    2) Transvision Vamp
    3) Regina Spektor.

I like shoe gaze and dream pop music but I don't think anyone making such music would ever expect to find themselves in the charts these days. I liked the examples here (Newmoon in particular). The electro pop stuff was dull. I like modern female music, so the two mentioned above are great.

As Mushymanrob suggests why would none of these tracks make the mainstream?

It won't but why care bout anyone else, if people can find music that they love and they are happy it's that the main thing. I would love it if more of the bands I like were more obviously successful most have 1 week top 10 albums and then plummet but they sell out mid size venues and arenas so enough people are liking them and finding them even if they don't do that well in charts and are known by everybody.

Simple choice if you want to stay in the past stay in the past, if you don't either like what's in the charts or don't, if you don't you need to look and listen harder, isn't that basically what John Peel did , now we all have to be Peels if we want to find what we like

Only difference he brought people together following his lead now we are all over the place liking different things

Because they are on indie labels and don't get played in the radio or added to Spotify playlists , there is so much music out there now 11000 new tracks get added to Spotify every week, we need curators to guide us all to the same place like John Peel or Zane Lowe everything is so fractured now see my last post. I listen to so much new music and I have only heard of two of those bands so what hope does the general public have.

There were many indie releases in the 70s and 80s and Peel was a great curator. I'm glad you recognise that it is impossible to sift everything as an individual and that there is a need for curation. If there was a John Peel or Zane Lowe and if people here on DS for example were to listen to them religiously like I did to Peel in the 70s and 80s, it might just be possible or get some ( and it only ever will be some) of this music into the mainstream. That might improve the overall quality of pop music.

You are right that listening behaviour is fragmented and there is a persistent theme on DS that music taste is entirely subjective and it's all about personal consumption. And that's all that matters. If you really care about pop music and want to make it better a bit of curation and trying to make some of these great alternative artists popular is a worthy objective.

All sorts to be honest as long as it is not that screaming stuff they call heavy metal, because that is just noise.
But from 60's, 70', early 80', seemed to go to pot after that. I like Jazz, classical.

oh i agree im happy for people to find music of whatever variety that they like, and whether 2016 was a great year for music falls into the old trap of the difference between personal taste and the bigger picture.

of course personal taste is often totally different to the big picture. so whilst one fm can say 2016 was a great year for them personally , which is perfectly ok, it cannot be argued that 2016 was a great year for music overall - can it?

i dont want to stay in the past, i never have, but i lament the apparent lack of the great strong generic styles that we all have enjoyed, or not, since the 1950's.

but hey - we have been here before! :D

We kind of curate each other at Fatherandy Haven forums many of us have personal charts and we post tracks of the day , it is a much more positive place when it comes time music http://fatherandy2.*********.com/ although we have plenty debates and arguments as well

Oh it's true that the best Music never makes it mainstream.

A genre that I like that hardly gets a look in is Ambient Music, I know Strong was a big hit for London Grammar, but there are other good songs within this genre that hardly get played in the charts.

Trance is my main genre and I love it when other people feel the same connection to the music as I do.

I also like Dubstep, drum and bass and electro house.

Mainstream music has been terrible the last couple of years, so I don't bother having the radio on in the car anymore. I liked it when house music was revived, but then as soon as a trend catches on, the music industry overkill it and it becomes too much. And the term EDM pisses me off, as pretty much everything is now EDM in the charts and its a load of rubbish.

    .

i know others might argue against this, but i think theres a special connection between trance fans, because we 'get it', the emotional understanding of where this music takes us.
