My sisters birthday is in June but want to start thinking about it now cos I would have to order something wrap it and send it to Australia. I know the sort of things she likes kind of... But I don't know what's allowed to be sent through the post to Australia as I thought they had very strict laws on what is and isn't allowed?

Far as I can tell, live animals, wood pulp, asbestos, ceramics and nuclear products are prohibited. So that still gives you plenty of options.

As per Mumof3's post, the restrictions are fairly standard and you shouldn't run in to any problems with most ordinary gifts bought from a shop.

Anything commercially made should be fine as long as it's sealed and in packaging, even if it could be banned in other forms; namely food/drink and gifts made out of things like wood that's been treated/processed should be okay as long as they are commercially manufactured and sealed.

The things to be avoided would be any and all home-made food/drink and some traditionally made ornaments or things you've made yourself from stuff in your back garden (anything with flowers, grasses, plants, seeds, grains, live or dead animals or animal parts (including fur), soil, sand, untreated wood, twigs etc).

Australia has also banned a few things via air-mail we'd take for granted , specifically laser pointers, cigarette lighters, pornography and chewing tobacco.

Depending on what you're getting her, would it be worth ordering from something like Amazon Australia, so it's posted local, avoiding some of the worry about what you can and can't send?

A mountain bike might be a good idea. I think there are quite a few mountains in Australia.
