I've been a barmaid and it makes total sense to me to use plastic. It is very easy for things to get knocked over and broken when it is busy, and a total nightmare to have to force yourself through crowds to clean something up, also broken glass with very busy crowds is asking for someone to get cut.

I think the main reason is convenience of the bar staff, keeping on top of washing up when it is busy is bad enough, let alone when it is an England match!

I thought Wetherspoons were television and music free pubs.

There are a few bars near me that previously didn't show football are have music but are now. The money that can be made is probably very hard to resist

It happens all the time in Cardiff when there's a big event on at the stadium, even concerts - apparently something to do with a South Wales Police directive.

Went to local Wetherspoons last night, not to watch the England game. I avoid pubs when England games are on. But I thought as its at 11pm the earlier part of the evening will not be too rowdy. And it wasnt. It was actually less busy than a normal saturday night. We went in at 8.50 and left at 10.30 to go home to watch the game. The first drink we had were in normal glasses but when I went to the bar for the second drink the barman said they had to use plastic glasses. i said half an hour ago you gave me a normal glass. He said they have been told to use plastic glasses from two hours before England games until two hours after. Why? Are they expecting a riot? Did anyone else go to a wetherspoons last night and have plastic glasses? I assume it may be a policy for the whole chain. Its bad that they feel the need to do this. Not blaming them for doing so and being cautious. Its just a shame that they have to.

It could be they were expecting to be busy or it could be a licensing condition for all pubs in the area , many areas have such rules imposed upon them

And some have moved to them by choice

I'm guessing it depends where you are.

Probably, but it's certainly not all pubs as was in the post I quoted.
