Is anyone watching this now on BBC FOUR? Great fun - lovely fuzzy childhood nostalgia! The things they had to do to film Skippy's 'arms'!

I set my recorder for this last week and ordered the season 1 Skippy boxset to accompany it.

It was never a fave of mine but I watched it often and a look back at any shows of that era has to be worth watching for those that were there when it was first on

I thoroughly enjoyed this programme. It wasnt just the nostalgia factor, it was a fascinating documentary in its own right. I would also add my praises for BBC4 - this channel has some fantastic programmes!:D

Excellent documentary on a much-loved series - it was so bad, it was bloody brilliant .....

The "behind-the-scenes" stories were enlightening and frequently hilarious ..... :D

Exellent stuff, I wasn't expecting a lot cos I never rated Skippy as a child and 60 mins could have been a lot of time to fill but they pulled it off with some aplome and good humour.

To this day, despite not having seen it for decades, the name of Ed Devereaux is burned into my frontal lobe. Such is the power of kids telly.

I'll be expecting a similar BBC 4 Documentary on other absolute crap kid's TV shows from the 1960/70s.

    Daktari
    White Horses
    The Singing Ringing Tree
    The Double Deckers
    Shazam

    Why ?

Were they as successful as "Skippy" ?

Did they include the lovely Liza Goddard ?

Were they actually filmed in an awesome natural habitat ?

ETA Did they have a "chopper" ?

    :D

From memory of 1967/68, [which was the first we had TV in our house] Skippy was on usually on a Sunday afternoon, followed by Candid Camera on the Ulster ITV region, at 5.00 when Thunderbirds wasn't on. Can't say I was that big a fan of either, and I was 12 or 13 then. Later in the very early 70s they put the Golden Shot on at around that time.

    And do you remember

    Hope & Keen's Crazy Bus
    Banana Splits
    Zocko (or was it Zokko)?
Tarzan (with Ron Ely, and like Daktari had Mexico pretending to be Africa)
    The Harlem Globetrotters (cartoon series)
    Champion The Wonder Horse

So many 'crap' series, but great nostalgia nonetheless.

I meant the original version that used to be shown in the mornings every summer holiday although the spoof dub was amusing as well

I reckon all the above posters who said "I wasn't really a fan" or "I never rated it" were really closet Skip fanatics! Go on, admit it! ;)

There were, however, quite a few times when credibility was stretched to the limit, usually in scenes where Skippy had ‘conversations’ with her human counterparts. An example is the following exchange from ep. 64, ‘The Hikers’, where Skippy brings a dead snake to Jerry King:

    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: What have you got there, Skip?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: Why on earth would you kill this?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: Alright, alright, I know you didn’t. It’s been killed with a stick.
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: Where did you find it, Skip?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: No, don’t bother Sonny, he’s busy doing his classes. You and I will handle this.
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: Hasn’t got anything to do with the schoolteachers, has it Skip?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
    Jerry: Did they kill it?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: It didn’t bite one of them, did it Skip?
    Skippy: Tchk tchk tchk.
Jerry: Ah, no! Must be real panic going on out there. Come on, Skip, you’ll have to show me where they are.
