Vabosity's Third Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #45.
There is no theme to today’s post in the Third Anniversary Review. It just contains five tracks that I like a great deal that were initially submitted to the thread during the first few months of its existence.
Bobby Darin - Eighteen Yellow Roses (1963) First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
Bobby Darin was a superlative artist, who recorded a multitude of superb tracks in a multitude of different styles. He did country music particularly well, as this fine track clearly demonstrates.
Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him (1963) First submitted to the thread in July 2010.
An excellent English language cover version of Petula Clark’s French language track Chariot. Neither Little Peggy March nor Pet Clark had a hit with this song in the UK.
The Left Banke - Pretty Ballerina (1967) First submitted to the thread in September 2010.
The Left Banke’s magnificent original version of Walk Away Renee (which has already featured in the Third Anniversary Review) is for me the perfect melodic pop single. This is the band’s follow-up single, which I’m also rather fond of.
Raymond Froggatt - Callow La Vita (1968) First submitted to the thread in October 2010.
I don’t know what offends me the most, the fact that this wonderful original version failed to chart or the fact that the Dave Clark Five’s excruciating cover version (re-titled Red Balloon) was a top ten hit.
Roy Orbison - Love Hurts (1961) First submitted to the thread in October 2010.
This song was first recorded as an album track by the Everly Brothers. There have been several cover versions of it over the years, but imho this one by the uniquely gifted Roy Orbison is unquestionably the best.
Raymond Froggatt - Callow La Vita (1968) First submitted to the thread in October 2010.

personally I'd go for s combination of a) Raymond Froggatt was a great musician who somehow missed the boat b) this wasn't the song that typified his funky jazzy pop sound that was just that little bit too early and c) let's not forget that Dave Clark got righteously ignored by the UK market for drivel like this, but paradoxically made enough from the US being dumb about music to make enough money to save 'Ready Steady Go',
Is it safe to come back out? Have the Barron Knights gone?
Phew!!!
Kay Barry no info
You're right there - but we can conjecture a bit.
That's three covers of hits by others. And a quick look at 45.cat shows 'Sherry', 'It Might As Well Rain Until September', 'It's My Party', 'Be My Baby' and sorry - 'Come Outside', among other covers. She was on Embassy Records, often just on the b side of the single.
Never going to be a star - Embassy were sold in Woolies, not the general record shops, and were usually a sign of even less quality than Top Rank recordings. (see http://www.spanglefish.com/thewonderofembassyrecords/ for info on the label)

nowt wrong with the barron knights they added abit of frivolity..
yeah id noticed her material was all covers, tbh bobbys girl wasnt a bad one, sounding alot like susan maughans big hit.
50 years ago today we first heard possibly the best tv theme tune ever, certainly one of the most recognisable and ground breaking. ron grainer was a genius. apart from it being a tv theme, it was also a fantastic piece of music, mysterious, futuristic , with a touch of darkness...
it has to be done...

Indeed it does have to be done.
Mind you, it drives me bloody mad that Delia Derbyshire doesn't really get any credit. Grainer might have written the theme, but it was her genius at the Radiophonic Workshop that turned it into the electronic wonder it is (with assist from Dick Mills).
I doubt it would have lasted 50 years if it was one of Grainer's lush stringy orchestra things.
Nice to see 'The Making of The Doctor' recognise this and have a scene of Delia in the studio crafting the theme.

Vabosity's Third Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #8.
Gene Chandler - Duke Of Earl (1962) First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
I love Doo-wop music, and although it’s usually associated with the fifties, a lot of great tracks were still being recorded in the early sixties. This is the original version of a song that was a big UK hit single for Doo-wop revivalists, the Darts, in the late seventies.
I’m a massive fan of Doo-wop music, so I’ve decided that today’s post will consist entirely of Doo-wop tracks. As you can see, the brilliant Duke Of Earl by Gene Chandler has already featured in the Third Anniversary Review, so I searched the thread for other just as brilliant Doo-wop tracks, found quite a few, and am repeating five of them below.
The Volumes - I Love You (1962) First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
A splendid Doo-wop ditty that was the group’s only hit in the USA. It goes without saying that it failed to chart in the UK.
Rosie and the Originals - Angel Baby (1960) First submitted to the thread in August 2010.
This one's a bit of an oddity in Doo-wop terms inasmuch as Rosie is the only one singing throughout the track so there is obviously no vocal harmony, and yet in all other respects this is unquestionably Doo-wop. The track may be simplistic and unpolished, but in its own unique way it’s quite magnificent.
The Marvelows - I Do (1965) First submitted to the thread in November 2010.
By the mid-sixties Doo-wop music was very much out of vogue, so this fine track peaked at a rather lowly #37 on the U.S. singles chart in 1965. Had it been recorded and released three years earlier I’m sure it would have made the U.S. top ten.
The Pentagons - To Be Loved (1960) First submitted to the thread in July 2011
I get the impression from many of his posts that Barney is as big a fan of Doo-wop music as I am. This track was new to me when Barney first submitted it to the thread just over two years ago, but it’s remained a firm favourite of mine ever since.

Vabosity's Third Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #46.

As you can see, the brilliant Duke Of Earl by Gene Chandler has already featured in the Third Anniversary Review, so I searched the thread for other just as brilliant Doo-wop tracks, found quite a few, and am repeating five of them below.
There’s only one way to follow a Third Anniversary Review post consisting entirely of Doo-wop tracks and that’s with a Third Anniversary Review post consisting of more Doo-wop tracks.
I searched the thread for some great Doo-wop tracks, found quite a few, repeated five of them in my previous post and am repeating five more below.
Dion - Ruby Baby (1963) First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote some fantastic songs, and Ruby Baby is certainly one of them. The original 1956 version by the Drifters is imho the definitive version, but this is a superb cover.
The Passions - Gloria (1960) First submitted to the thread in July 2010.
It’s been a very long time (too long) since I (or anyone else) last posted to the Rare 70’s Classics thread, but I vaguely remember submitting my favourite version of this much covered song, the one by Manhattan Transfer, to that particular thread. Check out that version if you have time, but first please click on the above link to hear this fine version by the Passions, which is also well worth a listen.
The Regents - Barbara Ann (1961) First submitted to the thread in August 2010.
Although the 1973 film American Graffiti was a nostalgic piece set in 1962, most of the songs on the soundtrack were actually from the fifties. This is one of the few sixties tracks used. You’ll certainly know the song, but not necessarily this version.
Jo Ann Garrett - A Thousand Miles Away (1967) First submitted to the thread in April 2011.
Jo Ann Garrett, backed by the Dells, delights us with a track that’s a fabulous mix of Doo-wop and Soul.
The Duprees - You Belong To Me ( 1962) First submitted to the thread in April 2012.
In January 1953, Jo Stafford’s version of You Belong To Me, became the second ever Number One single in UK chart history, and the first ever by a female artist. As much as I admire (in a guilty pleasure sort of way) Jo Stafford and other fifties singers of her ilk, I have to say that I much prefer the Duprees’ Doo-wop version of the song.
Good to see another Scottish band on this thread. The Beatstalkers just a wee bit before my time but love these tracks with that mod/soul feel to them.
I see that one of the group, Eddie Campbell, later joined Tear Gas another Scottish band that I did see around 1972. Perhaps Tear Gas formed too late to be featured later in this thread?

...cant think who comes next...... lol. (or will they?)
Dion - Ruby Baby (1963)
First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote some fantastic songs, and Ruby Baby is certainly one of them. The original 1956 version by the Drifters is imho the definitive version, but this is a superb cover.
The Passions - Gloria (1960)
First submitted to the thread in July 2010.
The Regents - Barbara Ann (1961)
First submitted to the thread in August 2010.
Although the 1973 film American Graffiti was a nostalgic piece set in 1962, most of the songs on the soundtrack were actually from the fifties. This is one of the few sixties tracks used. You’ll certainly know the song, but not necessarily this version.
Jo Ann Garrett - A Thousand Miles Away (1967)
First submitted to the thread in April 2011.
Jo Ann Garrett, backed by the Dells, delights us with a track that’s a fabulous mix of Doo-wop and Soul.
The Duprees - You Belong To Me ( 1962)
First submitted to the thread in April 2012.
In January 1953, Jo Stafford’s version of You Belong To Me, became the second ever Number One single in UK chart history, and the first ever by a female artist. As much as I admire (in a guilty pleasure sort of way) Jo Stafford and other fifties singers of her ilk, I have to say that I much prefer the Duprees’ Doo-wop version of the song.
so skipping the beatles...

interesting selection today
I see that one of the group, Eddie Campbell, later joined Tear Gas another Scottish band that I did see around 1972. Perhaps Tear Gas formed too late to be featured later in this thread?
