According to latest BARB viewing figures (for October 2005), Sky News had a multi-channel viewing share of 0.7%, out of Sky's total of 9.5%.
So Sky News represents about 7.5% of Sky's total audience. If you allow for the fact that there are fewer adverts on movie channels and that Sky News is also brooadcast overseas, then I would have thought it is likely that Sky News earns about 10% of Sky's advertising revenues.
Last year, Sky's advertising revenue was £329m, this year it is forecast to be about £350million. So Sky News may have advertising revenue of about £35million.
With costs around £45million, it's losses may be as low as about £10million. A very good investment for the benefits mentioned above.
No loss. I wouldnt have know it was there if it wasnt for this thread.
The channel as it stands may not be a loss, however it's a loss when you look at what it could have (should have?) been. With proper commitment and resources (and an acceptance that it would NEVER turn in a profit) it could have been a force to be reckoned with (considering the wealth of news talent that ITV has/had at its disposal.
Sadly, perhaps one final nail in the coffin of ITV's factual/news output - gone are the days of good journalism found in programmes such as World In Action, and the investigative reporting from the likes of John Pilger.
I think it is a shame that Itv news channel is closing, what are the bets on how it will close will there be a goodbye?
5.30pm,seems the last half-hour is a special of highlights and best-bits.
it's probably been said before but I'd really like a REALLY REALLY REALLY MAJOR story to kick-off around 5.45ish and stitch them up. It'll serve 'em right for closing it down!

It would be very funny if something major story breaks. Maybe there will announce that Please turn to BBC News 24 for better news coverage and good bye

If it was that major then it would be on the ITV News on ITV1 which starts at 6.00pm and the Regional News would just be put on hold.
