Want my wisdom teeth removed

I live in Scotland and want my wisdom teeth removed, they are pushing my other teeth together. According to my dentist, they are not a big problem but he says I can get them out if I want

Is it my dentist who removes them or a hospital? How much will NHS charge?

Why not just ask your dentist, about these things

Your dentist will refer you to the hospital. If the surgeon thinks it's cosmetic then you're going to have to pay for the operation yourself.

Oh, and I hope you like pain and discomfort, lack of sleep and eating soup.

Is there actual and persistent real pain, discomfort and distress? (I do know what a literal pain wisdom teeth can be)

If yes then go back to dentist and make the case. If it's a straightforward operation then it can be done at your own dental practice otherwise it'll be done at the local dental hospital if, for example, there's a possibility of coincidental trigeminal nerve damage (and you really don't want that).

If you do decide to go ahead, make sure you get the painkiller and antibiotic prescriptions (and complete the latter fully if you're given one!) sorted before you undergo the operation and stock up beforehand on straws, complans, soups and pot noodles.

If it's upper teeth the dentist will do them himself. Cost about £50 each down here. Took ten minutes for each of mine. Not particularly painful but the squeaking as they came out was unpleasant.

For lower wisdom teeth you'll probably be referred to hospital. No idea what the cost would be and probably a bit more painful and annoying. Can occasionally result in nerve damage.

My dentist referred me to the hospital for 3 of mine, not because he couldn't do them, but because I was such an anxious patient that putting me to sleep was far safer for all concerned. 2 of them would have been quite easy, the other was more complicated and causing a lot of pain as it growing at an angle. I then just asked the hospital to take the 4th one out as it seemed an ideal opportunity! Cost nothing at hospital, but would have cost at the dentist - tooth extraction, x rays, sedation (if needed)

Thats where work health insurance comes in very handy. Had a sod of a lower wisdom tooth hacked out 3 years ago. £100 excess for a £1200 operation on Harley Street, absolute quality job all round. Had it done on a Friday afternoon, less than 48 hours later I was comfortably eating a chewy roast at my local.

Some dentists can remove wisdom teeth, others can't. Depends on if your dentist is specialist in this task. Obviously if you have a particular issue with them even a dentist expert in wisdom tooth removal may still recommend u goto hospital. No idea how long it would take to get it done, I bet it's not seen as an emergency, but low priority......luckily, my dentist is specialised in this so I did not need a hospital to do it.

Had my bottom right removed at the hospital referred by my dentist. No cost for removal at hospital.

Whether you need to go to hospital depends on how you teeth are positioned (impacted etc) so it's normally for medical reasons whilst your points are cosmetic Ask your dentist if he can do them.

I had all 4 of mine taken out under general anaesthetic about 5 years ago. Very little post-surgery pain and little bruising. I was referred to the hospital by my dentist as all 4 were impacted and I'd suffered from persistent infections for years. I was so pleased to be rid of them!

I was offered to have mine out at the dentist, I believe it depends on how badly impacted they are.

Not sure the GP is the best person to advise in dental matters - the OP needs to go back to his dentist and enquire.

Priority Tuesday AM - ring the dentist to get an appointment to discuss all the available options and I hope that things work out for you. :)

It varies. I had both upper wisdom teeth extracted in one visit to my dentist, it took about a day for the bleeding to fully stop, and I was eating normally after that.

I have to travel to a (distant) hospital to have one of my lower wisdom teeth removed, though. It's almost completely covered over, but it keeps getting infected. It's also growing at an awkward angle. The procedure is going to be done in theatre under general anaesthetic, and I've been told there's a 20% chance of permanent numbing if they damage a nerve. Not looking forward to this, but I just want it over with. It's been almost a year since I first starting having this trouble, six months since I spoke to the consultant, and I've needed six courses of antibiotics for infections so far. I don't know what the recovery time is going to be, but I suspect this is going to be an ordeal.
