New Gas Fire Advice

Although we have central heating we also have a gas fire (which looks like a real open fire) and looks really cosy in deepest winter.

We now need to replace this.

I was thinking of a "fire in the wall" type, without the need for a fireplace.

Is it best to have an open gas fire or one with a glass front?

Any experiences / advice would be appreciated.

The glass fronted ones can be upto about 80% efficient. Open ones rarely more than 35% if my memory serves me well as most of the heat goes up the chimney.

Depends if you want heat or looks for your money. :)

Really need it for when we need some heat for an hour or two (ie in Autumn) without having to put the full central heating system on, or to "top up" the warmth when it's really cold.

An attractive fire would also make a good focal point to the room.

There is some advice about choosing a fire here -

Though maybe Seacam or someone will offer advice later on. :)

I need two new gas fires so I'll have to look again soon.

We have one, but it is more for the look.

It is a one that goes on the wall. It has a radiator that you can turn on at the back.

Here is a picture of our living room and you can see it on the wall:

Rather pricey though. You'd be better off buying a plug in small heater fan that puffs heat out. That is all our one does.

Thanks for the replies - the photo of the hole in the wall fire does look nice - but if it does not produce much heat it is probably an expensive option.
