program to convert just the audio of an AVI file

Hi all
I have a quite a few AVI files with AC3 sound.
My tv accepts avi files on usb but wont accept AC3 files.
so at the moment the only sure way ive got to make them work is to convert the whole file to mpeg2 with mp3.
then you get into the whole changing of resolutions etc.

so what I would like is a program that just converts the audio from ac3 to mp3

anyone know of a program that does this?

Many thanks

Why not try this video converter program known as SUPER?

Well I have just given super c a go.
If I disable the video I just get an audio file.
I tried doing an avi to avi and changing the auio to mp3.
It all worked but took 35min compared to Imtoo (20min) and the quality was pretty ropey.
But thanks for the info and making the effort.

    Back to the drawing board!

I think you can tell Super to copy the video stream without re-encoding (v fast) and just convert the audio?

i do this all the time. usually to convert MKV with DTs audio down to aac.

it's been a long time since i used super so i don't know if it can do it.

what you really want to do is leave the video as is and just mux in some new audio. I would use mediacoder:
    http://www.mediacoderhq.com/
with the following setting changes from default.
    video tab: check 'copy video'
    audio tab: format - mp3
set quality in the lame tab on the RHS
    container tab: AVI auto select
    sound tab: normalize volume checked

whole movie should only take a couple of minutes. the video will be untouched.

I tried that but kept on getting errors
Then I realised that even though you are just copying the video you have to manually set the container and the output codec. This is a little frustrating as often I have to use Gspot to get that info.
Though once I worked that out the prog worked like a dream

    many thanks

gspot is pretty old now. mediainfo is much better for what you need.

if it's in an avi it's almost certainly going to be XviD.

Funnily enough that's what I I thought but that's when I got the errors. so out came gspot and it told me it was xvid mpeg4 so I set the codec to mpeg4 and it worked a treat.
I will have a look at your progs though.

    many thanks

Avidemux can copy video and convert just the audio. Its also a simple editor. I often use it to boost audio level.

I am liking the look of that a lot
    Thanks very much

I have downloaded it. Its so simple to set up
    but
I cant see how to actually start the conversion!!!
I know im being thick but there seems no obvious start button

Thought I would have another crack at AVIDemux.
I loaded a film which was an xvid with AC3 6channel audio.
I set the video to copy and set the audio output to mp3.

pressed save and I got the message
cannot setup audio encoder, make sure your stream is compatible with audio encoder (numbers of channels, bitrate, format)

so I am a little cofused

    any ideas

Go to Audio Filters, from the Mixer drop down choose Stereo. You will lose the 5.1 of course.
