Hi, we are looking for a destination in Greece for July. Somewhere reasonably traditional but not too isolated. We are not into clubbing. The beech is great but not for long periods instead we enjoy exploring, looking around town and country walks. Self catering.

Any recommendations?

Couple of places we really enjoyed were Chania in Crete and a little place on the coats near Argos in the Peloponnese (really sorry I cant remember the name ). One of the thing that we liked about both areas was that they were compact enough to to most places in a day trip if you hire a car and they are both full of lovely places to visit.

I would say a lot depends on whether you want the convenience of a package holiday, or the flexibility of a DIY trip. If you do the latter, it can give you many more options, including not limiting yourself to a single resort.

It also depends on how long you plan to go for, and whether you want early or late July.

    How about something like:
    a. Fly to Santorini - see the scenery etc there for a couple of days.
    b. Ferry to Naxos (2 hours) - great beaches, good inland scenery, very Greek as island is agricultural and not dependent on tourism (but more so now than it was).
    c. Ferry to Athens (3 hours - 6 hours) or fly - general sightseeing in Athens and nearby Aegina.
    d. Fly home from Athens.

How about Kefalonia? Where is a good central place on the island to stay?

San Stefanos in North West Corfu. Quiet, friendly. Not to touristy but enough to get you by. You can use the local bus easily enough to get you to Corfu Town which is beautiful in places.

This year will be our 10th visit. We stay at the Romanza Hotel though it's bed and breakfast.

Quite a pleasant island. Very popular with British package holiday tourists and also a sizeable number of Italians. It does not really have a centre as such - but several resorts. We stayed in Lassi which was quite laid back and had a good beach.

I went to Zante in 2005, stayed at the Havana Apartments in Laganas. Very nice. Maybe a bit noisy in the centre but a beautiful part of the world

We love Rhodes. Rhodes town is fascinating with plenty of history in the old town. There is a market to wander through and a harbour. You can take a trip to Simi or Marmaris. We hired a car and explored the whole island, there's more than enough to see in two weeks. Lindos is a must with it's pretty winding streets and you must go up to the Acropolis. We went by donkey. Go down to the far end of Rhodes and be amazed at the scenery where the two seas meet and watch the surfers. Rhodes has a very low crime rate and we felt very safe there. We did self catering, which was fine, but in Greece they don't give you a lot of kit for cooking. This was ok for us as we only had breakfast and the odd meal in. There is a fantastic fish market and fruit and veg market close to Rhodes town, which we really enjoyed. We've been three times and will go again definitely.

    Laganas? Really?

Try Alykes or Alykanas on Zante, small resorts with lots of countryside surrounding them.

Lefkas is nice. Although it is an island, it is connected to the mainland by a road bridge so you can drive there from the airport. It has resorts that are quiet and traditional and loads of gorgeous scenery. Lefkas town has a harbour full of luxury yachts - great for wandering around.
