Looks like we're gonna find out more about Windows 9 soon: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/26/microsoft-windows-9
Tomorrow (30th September) is the day! I set up this thread to discuss anything about the Windows 9 unveiling and Windows 9 in general. And try to keep the flame wars out if possible

Yet again an inaccurate article presumably from someone who has never actually used Windows 8.1
This sort of thing is quite irritating particularly to people like me who use Applications on Windows 8.1
"The problem of users having to toggle between the modern interface and the old-style desktop for Microsoft Office among other desktop applications has yet to be solved."
Simply not true - You can start applications from the Desktop or Taskbar as has always been the case, still the case in Windows 8.1
OK initially when installed the MS Office Icons go into the Modern UI Start Screen but it is simply a right click and choose to bung an Icon(s) on the Taskbar and to make a Desktop shortcut - hardly a problem to solve, it just does not exist. Same applies to other Applications.
"The Windows 8.1 update brought back the start button to Windows 8, but it simply opened the tiled start screen and not a start menu similar to Windows 7 or previous version of Windows."
Again just not true - Right clicking the Start Button will give a Start Menu of sorts, OK it's limited but it is there.
One thing is for sure Windows 8.1 users are in a much better position to use Windows 9 or whatever they call it than Windows 7 users.
I have the option to use the Start Screen as in Windows 8
I have the option of full screen store apps as default as Windows 8
The price is reasonable
Then I will upgrade
What a load of bovine excrement. This problem was solved by third parties within less than 1 nanosecond of windows 8 being released (actually even before release as third party solutions were devised for the pre-release version of course).
I would reword the above quote as
"The problem of users having to toggle between the modern interface and the old-style desktop for Microsoft Office among other desktop applications has yet to be solved by the woefully inept Microsoft Team, partly because they refused to accept they had made a major screw-up!"
Indeed MIcrosoft did a significant update to 8.1 to still get it badly wrong. They should listen to the (alleged) old IBM principle for major screw-ups "Nobody gets things wrong twice, they are fired after the first time!".
Windows 9 is really a cosmetic fudge - the changes being mooted were originally going to be W8.2 but as W8.x was now so badly maligned (pity as it really is quite good in many ways) they have given up the ghost and simply decided to rebrand.
Rebranding can have a major impact. When Renault bought out the Megane sales plummeted as the rear end was so different and many people thought it was ugly. So Renault facing a crisis, came up with a series of ads where photogenic people were shaking their rear ends in excitement on seeing the car. Sales rose spectacularly!
Maybe as faceless forumites we should all post pictures of ourselves wiping our rear ends with Windows 9? I think I have that line right, just gave it a cursory scan....
It can't be any worse than Microsoft's 'Honestly?' ad campaign for Windows Phone or the definition of perfection for XBOne. Or the colourful, flappy, twisty Surface campaign....
Really, when I wrote shaking rear ends, I meant literally i.e. wiggling from side to side in ecstatic joy - no darker undertone.
As the thread will no doubt turn into a Trollfest, I doubt anyone will be allowed anything but a view at the two extremes. It's getting as bad as the Windows v Mac idiocy...
Upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 9 said to be free (again), this time by a Microsoft official
Well I read that it was being unveiled today and nobody else had set up a thread so I just decided to set one up. And I'm not a total Windows hater, I do dual boot W7 on my Mac for gaming I was hoping there wouldn't be flame wars or trolling this time.
AFAIK, its not a Win9 launch event.
There is some more information about Win9 changes here,
http://winsupersite.com/windows/windows-9-technical-preview-video-leaks-analysis
PC Pro also think that the event discusses Windows 9. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/386059/windows-9-release-date-features-free-update-and-cloud-version
http://live.theverge.com/microsoft-windows-9-event-live-blog/
Its called Windows 10
I think they are trying to distance themselves from Windows 8, and imply it's a fresh new start.
But it also looks like they just randomly missed out the Windows 9 name, .
It certainly feels like Microsoft have listened to the feedback from Win 8/8.1 when putting together 10 (just like they did with Vista when putting together Windows 7).
The Start Menu looks how I would've liked it to look in Windows 8/8.1 - very smart

Joe Belfiore gives a nice quick overeview of the tech preview and Windows 10 here
