My brother-in-law wanted a clear glass 3 tier stand and John Lewis have exactly what he wanted. Problem was the stand only measures 37" across whilst the TV measures 42".

I remarked 'what does it matter, it will only spread a few inches beyond the width of the table either side'. The salesperson looked aghast saying the aesthetics would be all wrong, that the base should always be wider than the TV, like a pyramid.

The guy in JL as talking utter nonsense. The vast majority of people buy a TV stand that is either smaller or equal to the size of the TV. The thing most people love about the flat panel TVs is that they take up far less room that the old tube TVs, why would you want to stick it on a massive stand that takes up massive amounts of space.
Ignore the guy and buy whatever is right for you.

In the end they bought a glass stand that was exactly the same width as their new 47" TV. I was so impressed I've bought the same combo i.e. new TV and clear glass stand. :D
