samsung galaxy tab 3 to show on tv screen

hi, any ideas how to get films that I want to watch on my Samsung galaxy tab 3 to show on a tv screen, I git a connector that you plug into the tab 3 that then goes into a hdmi lead to the tv, I thought just connect it and go, but cant seem to be able to get a picture on my tv, is there any special software I need on the tablet itself?

    My GT3 to HDMI connector only works if the tablet is turned off completely and then powered up again once connected ie it won't work if connected then just "woken up".

    Is the tablet plugged into the mains whilst connected?
