I loved this show I dont see why people have a problem with the light displays, if you dont like it don't look, simples! I liked both houses and it make me laugh how competitive it can be, my sister decorates her garden in no way to the extent the kings of light do but herself and her neighbour each year try to out do each other its fab!!!!
Keep doing it Karl, there are some miserable sods in this world but hopefully they are the minority. They probably have a notice on their doors saying no carol singers.
Thank you :-)
Also C4 totally cut us out of the program and dubbed over my orignal musical shows as they couldn't be bothered to get clearance so check out the REAL thing at www.karlschristmasdisplay.co.uk

I still think the makers of the show should have delved into the post-Christmas electricity bills of each household, but I suppose such harsh truths would have put a dampner on what was Channel 4's now-predictable format of celebrating/poking fun at the eccentrics of the world.
About £150 more for us. Paul Tooles if far lower as he uses LED lights only and the Brailsfords will be huge as they have a lot of 40w light bulbs in there blowmoulds.

£150 doesn't seem too steep actually, would that be just for the month or quarterly?
This is just horrendous! I really don't understand why these people do this. Well I do - it's obviously for their own personal wellbeing. Nobody can say this looks good.
This guy, IIRC, was the one who's just finished his degree and is going on to do a Masters? How about joining the workforce and donating money to charity rather than annoying your neighbours.
It's clear from this thread that the majority think it's tacky and I'm just so glad I don't live near anyone that thinks otherwise!
Everyone is entitled to your own opinion and you have just had yours- my turn.
Firstly I do this for the parents and children that come each year for a bit of festive fun.
Secondly, my masters is a research degree which is fully funded by a research society and doesn't cost the tax payer anything, I also receive a bursary and not being a drain on YOUR or anyones taxes. The research is into a field of type 1 diabetes which is a serious condition and 1 I have. The "neighbour" on the program lives down the road and around the corner and CANNOT actually see the display unless he takes a 5 minute walk. My neighbours in close vicinity love the display and have said so.
Thirdly, we never set out to raise money for charity, people just left money on the door step so we gave it a try and its worked out for the best. So far we have raised £1117 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Have a merry christmas. I guess you'll have a moan in a minute that I am a tax burden on you because the NHS provides the daily medication I need to stay alive for free?

If you re-read my post karlbeetson you'll see I made no reference to taxes whatsoever! I was suggesting that perhaps you could simply donate money rather than your time and the cost of stuff you've bought.
I'm really sorry but £1117 is not a lot of money and you must have spent more than that on equipment/electricity/time.
It's great that you're raising money for charity but you're not doing it in a very productive way.
We were discussing the programme at work today (hospital ward) and we agreed that you cheered us all up. Just seeing the looks on some of the children's faces made me wish there was a similar display near where I live so that I could take my little granddaughter along...magical!
Ok fair point re- taxes. But if you knew my back story you'll know why I am currently not in the workforce. When I was 17 years old prior to sitting my A-levels I was suddenly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At the time I was also having flying lessons to fulfil my childhood ambition to become a professional airline pilot. Sadly diagnosis meant I was permanently excluded from getting the relevant medical. I went to uni anyway to study aerospace engineering however 2 years in, as I learnt more about my condition and helped others with type 1 and serious conditions, I realised that I had a new vocation which was to become a diabetes specialist doctor. This is now what I am setting out to achieve, the masters by research is partly an accelerated stepping stone away from engineering.
As I said above in my previous post- we never set out to raise money for charity. The display is for peoples enjoyment. In 2006 people just left money on the door step so we gave it a try and its worked out for the best. So far for this year we have raised £1117 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. That is £1117 the JDRF wouldn't of had.
But it isn't all about raising funds, it is also about raising awareness of the condition and complications and also promoting the charity.

I just think in an era of high cost of electricity it's a complete waste and drain on resources.I know you're paying for what you use but it is still using unneeded electric for pointless purposes.A lady two streets from us has a curfew on the noise and lights she puts up for Xmas. They have to go off by nine o clock. We can hear it with out windows closed so God knows how her neighbours feel about it.
Meh. I don't think it is anyone's business what they spend their money on, and good on them for making something that cheers people up. Personally, I didn't like the look of any displays but that's only because I'm a scrooge. Don't see why people have to be so obnoxious on here.

Precisely.
I only saw the opening ten minutes with the two Bristolian chavs, that was enough.
Why don't these indviduals give the £500 spent pa plus £200 electricity to the charity and then give their voluntary time for a couple of days.
Alternatively, find a few shops in their respective town centres, decorate the windows with their tat, place donation boxes and the name of the charity charity concerned.
The shops would be glad of the exposure and revenue generated, more people would view and donate, and the neighbours get some relief from traffic and these self appointed selfless heroes.
Well if you only saw the 1st 10 mins you wouldnt know about the others involved really and I am sick of all the stereotypical points people raise so I have gone public to dispell myths.
I already do donate my time to the JDRF providing motivational talks about living with diabetes to newly diagnosed children and their families. I have also broken 1 aviation world record www.flyingwithdiabetes.co.uk and raised funds on previous aviation projects to about the total of £50,000 now.
Also we have raised over what we have spent on elecy/lights this year and as I said we never set out to be a fundraising venture, people just left money so we provided a donation facility.
PLUS also if I can make 1 person more aware about type 1 diabetes and the JDRF it may just save a child's or young adults life who may have the condition but as yet undiagnosed.
To decorate a commercial premises requires far more expensive lights which are to certain ISO standards, there would be lots of red tape and hassle.

Why was there a Santa ghost in all the houses windows? Quite scary.
How on earth do they work - they look really effective.
As I'm sure most people have we've got people around here who do that sort of thing, and for charity too. I don't know if it's been diagnosed but there is certainly some addiction there - they've said for years it's the last time they'll do it, but every year they're back up. Of course though having two houses not too far apart means a bit of competitive spirit too.
It's all a bit NIMBY too - thankfully around us they're not the houses opposite, but nice to see on the way back from wrok every night.

Posting on DS is a bit pointless but we all, including you do it. If you are that concerned about wasted electric, why not turn of your computer.
Pretty sure I would go mad having to listen to that ghastly music and see those tacky lights for 5 weeks a year. Not to mention the invasion of people's privacy in an otherwise quiet street. Awful:
I agree. I think I'd move if any of my neighbour did anything even 10% as tacky and taste free as what those people did to their houses.
Just plain hideous imo and I find it hilarious that people who don't think doing your house up like Las Vegas and who actually like to retain an element of taste and quiet dignity are the ones being accused of being miserable.

It's a good job you don't live by me then. There is about three houses on our street alone covered in lights, then there is a bungalow nearby which is pretty similar to the houses shown on the show last night. The man who lives there has done it for years, and it's got more extravagant as the years have passed. People actually take their kids to see it.
I don't have a problem with it. I think it's nice, it's the competition element I don't understand. But each to their own.
It was never meant to be a competition and all 3 of us taking part didn't know this and we took part in a different spirit. C4 manipulated and got the material they wanted to edit... and wah-lah!

I think they're laughing - or just pleased that they don't live nearby

That is exactly another reason what it is all about, "nice to see on way home from work"
