I think we should impose similar rules in the UK, if we already haven't.

No we shouldn't. It's authoritarian and illiberal.

I don't think you're allowed to register your child as '\' in this country either!

Probably not, but you could name them "Slash".

Lucifer is a real name though. God named him as an angel. It's a biblical name:confused:

But surely there has to be a limit what if they want to call their kid "**** Off" or something offensive.

I do think that some names should be banned if it's likely to cause the child severe bullying

If it promised not to include Jaden, I'd vote for it.

Who in the right mind would name their twins Benson and Hedges??

I'm all for giving children unique and beautiful names but you have to draw the line somewhere.

I wanted to call my daughter Araminta but was over ruled lol

Should ban Mohammed, that'd cause some upset.

I disagree. I think kids have to be protected and I don't see why that shouldn't include being saved from having a name like "Anal"...I'm actually hoping those parents were joking and knew they'd be blocked from using that name by authorities but even then, wow.

^^^This +1. Any poor kid with a name like that would no doubt be tormented and bullied at school so the New Zealand authorities are doing these kids a great favour by saving them from their unhinged parents.

That's fine, but how do you define it? Around here someone called "Corey" would be bullied because it's a slang word for a penis.

And Beelzebub means lord of the heavenly dwelling.

    It's not about the definition.

What about banning overly used names...like Calee Kaylee Jaylee Baylee or bad spellings of names that are heard everywhere like Madyson or Alexus

Officials here do have the right to refuse certain names if they are deemed offensive. Numbers are also not allowed to be used in names.

I think that those 'rules' are appropriate and I don't think we need any more than that in terms of the government telling us what we can name our children.

Even in countries where there are some restrictions like Germany and Sweden, the odd ridiculous name gets the go ahead.
