Would the UK be better off if mothers stayed home?

I think a lot of this country's problems could be solved if women (or men) stayed home after having children and only worked part-time once the children started school.

Advantages:
  1. The children would have a better start in life with their mothers always there for them.
  2. There would be more jobs available for school leavers and the jobless.
  3. The benefits system could be adjusted to PAY women to stay home and look after their children. thus freeing up jobs for the childless.
  4. The roads would be less congested because less people would be commuting.

They would have to put the wages up or bring the prices down.

I fully agree as my dinner will be ready on the table when I get in as well as all my ironing done.

It might be you that does the ironing. (And get a servant, then).

Oh well thanks for planning my life out for me! Can I plan what you do with yours? I think all men should go and work on oil rigs in the North Sea. Reasons

    1) The mothers staying at home would have less ironing
    2) Less traffic on the roads
    3) It would free up time for extra marital affairs
    4) It would harden them and make them more attractive and less whiny.

The very low cost of childcare here plus the year and a half(!) paternity leave you get for each child (to be shared between the parents) enables the mum or dad to stay at home in the early years. It's very common for the mum to stay home initially, then the dad takes up to a year off!
Kids seem much happier in this setting, than the kids we knew in the UK being dragged to nursery every day from year dot.

So yes, it would be I think.

I know several mums who would give their right arm to pack in work and stay at home with the kids but as a society we have gotten ourselves into a position where we have to have two wages coming in to pay for the mortgages and life styles we all want.
So as studulike says it means wages going up or bills coming down, neither of which is going to happen any time soon.
So to answer your question head on, yes In do think it would be better, but I am a man, married to a woman who would love to jack it in to be with the kids, so I would wouldn't I.
You'll get a different answer from women who want to work of course.
It would be nice for them to have the choice but the vast majority don't.
Heres an idea, women go to work and men stay at home, I'm up for that one.:)

and no social interaction with their peers to improve social skills for children, and no "kid-free" time for mothers.

we'd have a nation full of inexperienced, under-skilled workers and there's a risk of a drop in economic productivity

Yes, because this country likes paying people to stay at home, and besides, all the extra employment gained would be negated because we'd all have to pay much higher taxes to finance this

Except all these young and/or jobless people who don't commute now would all start commuting so the situation wouldn't improve.

    It would be lovely
I would happily work and support a wife and kids if the missus wanted to stay home and be a housewife.
Its a different age now though, that type of thing is rare, kids are brought up by the system instead with a bit of home input from mum and dad.
Mum usually has to work as well as dad to afford a home and general basics, the option has been taken away for the women who wanted to stay home. The sexual revolution occurred and that was the end of that age.

    good or bad?
I don't know, there are probably pros and cons to both sides of the argument but the option has more than often been snatched away these days.

Yes, that would work just as well. If the woman was in a high-paid job, then the man could claim the stay-at-home benefit.

I agree that we all want the lifestyle of the rich - a TV in every room, two cars, holidays abroad etc. Years ago (in my parents time) the man worked, the wife worked part-time or not at all and they managed on what they earned - no credit cards or payday loans then!

What happens when the dad does a bunk and leaves the woman and kids without any money?

Well, it would be the same as it is now. She would claim benefits and get a 6-bedroomed house.

They had the Tally Men in those days or pawn shops.

But obviously without all the usual outrage and moralising that usually comes with it.

The other thing is that, unless the woman is in a high-paid job, it actually costs money to go to work. There is transport costs, clothes, lunches, make-up, buying presents and cards for colleagues (not that I would do that because it is stupid) etc.

The woman would save a fortune by not leaving the house. Nursery schools and toddler groups would still exist so that the child could have some interaction with it's peers..

Well, he wouldn't would he? After all, he gets his tea on the table every night (oo-er Missus!), the kids are all ready for bed when he gets home, the house is clean and tidy and Mum is not too tired at bedtime because she's been at home all day.

What man would give that up?

Oh dear me, there's some bait if ever I saw it.

Oddly most people seem obsessed with when am I going back to work, or "what else do you do?". Though this may be more to do with me being a dad at home rather than a mum.

You know there are other reasons women buy this stuff other than for work - usually a social life, or would you want them to give that up too, as you seem to think women should never leave the house?

I'd kill myself if I had to stay at home all day and not be working.

Oh right so the woman will be at home during the day without light, heating or food and the groceries will deliver themselves for free :D

Don't know how you are finding it, but for me being back at work is a lot less tiring than looking after a kid!

Those things are there anyway. Eating food at home is cheaper than buying lunch out. Heating will be a bit extra but that can be taken into account when calculating the "Stay-at-Home" benefit.

I am not even gonna discuss light because it is neglible.

I think Facebook has already reached critical mass in terms of mothers at home.

It's the most exhausting job I've had. Best one too though.

Being the token dad everywhere does pose it's own challenges, though the mums are pretty used to me now.

But I take my own sandwiches to work and the canteen is subsidised anyway
