Has anybody on here got one and what are they like?
Turns out you can't play the DOOM3 BFG edition on the PC without one.

Before you buy the DOOM game, check the forums first. Some people are having problems with it. LINK
Have you tried the Railworks forum on the STEAM website? If not, they might be able to help you: LINK
Agreed, i have a bit of a splurge during the sales
I've only had one or two problems getting games to start, but they're quickly fixed by browsing the Steam forums or entering the error code into Google.
Currently playing black mesa, (the revamped better graphics original half life).
^this^
Remember when it first came out and we all thought it was just an annoying piece of shit?
Couldn't live without it now.
OP, imagine Steam as being like iTunes for games. Except, crucially, unlike iTunes Steam is user-friendly, has wonderful tech support, and every now and then just gives you free stuff. Your games are for the most part auto-patched, and there are awesome sales happening all the time (some of their pricing is a bit steep, but sooner or later everything shows up cheap if you can catch it when it does).
I registered with steam years ago, I no longer use the email address associated with it.
I now have a new laptop, can't get my access code from the email address.
I messaged steam support, they gave me a link to some instructions that weren't really helpful so I think I just have to accept I've lost them games.
But overall I'd suggest them to anyone, some greak bargains and it's a good place to find games you wouldn't normally find. I had loads of brilliant games I'd never heard of in the under £7 and under £4 sections.
I've had my steam account banned 3 times only to have them admit they made a mistake after several weeks of arguing with them.
Most steam games refuse to allow multiple in-game profiles so its 1 profile per-disc, Terrible if you have more than 1 person using the computer who wants to play the game. console gamers have multiple gamer profiles so why cant pc gamers?
You can't select the game install directory, I was running out of HDD space a few months ago so wanted games to install on another drive yet steam doesn't allow this.
ive had tons of problems with it over the years & even more trouble trying to talk to the people who run it when i have problems.
theres a reason there are so many 'steam sucks' posts around the net.
Multiple Steam accounts can be done on PC too.
If I have to buy a PC game, I would much rather have it support Steam instead of that piece of crap Game For Windows Live (or whatever MS are calling it in W8). I've never had any major problems with Steam, been using it since 2002/3 and it is much better now than back then.
I would even take Origin over GFWL.
I will take call of duty as an example, There are 3 people in my house who like to play COD on our PC.
Before COD went onto steam we were able to create multiple in-game profiles so we could each have our own save games, stats etc...
Since COD moved onto steam you can't do that, You either all have to share the same saves/stats & profile or you have to buy several copies of the game to install to activate on different steam accounts.
This basically means only 1 person can play through single player & the other 2 have to wait for them to finish before they can start. We all end up having to share online stats, profile name, custom weapon load outs, etc.... & that makes it practically impossible for us all to play unless as I say we buy 3 copies of the game to activate on our individual steam accounts.
The same is true with all steam based games, you can only activate it on 1 account.
In my case the PC is mine, However my sister & a friend (Who doesn't have any consoles & only has a non-gaming laptop) also buys/plays games on it.
With games running via steam if I buy the game then its activated through my steam profile meaning that neither my sister or friend can play it unless they use my steam profile & obviously my saves, stats, customizations, friends list & so on.
It would be like buying an Xbox360 or PS3 game & finding you can only play that game on the 1st profile you log into, If others wanted to play the game they would need to play on that profile so you would be sharing achievements/trophy's, saves, friends lists.
I've got 3 copies of black-ops sitting on my shelf because I brought one, My sister wanted to play on her own profile so she had to go out & buy another copy & Same for my friend. Its ridiculous that you have to do that if more than 1 person happens to use the PC & play that game.
Non-Steam based games often have the ability for multiple users to create profiles within the game, GFWL despite its bugs also allows multiple profiles to play the same copy of the game, Its pretty much only steam that doesn't (Although I don't know about other things like Origin?).
