People can say what they want about Fergie and AVB and whoever, none of them could manage a team the size of Notts Forest to win the European Cup. Twice.
No one can explain why the Scottish World Cup Song was out, and a hit some 3 months before the tournament in June? Didn't Rod Stewart do some forgettable tune at the actual time that made top five briefly. Was that un-official?
By the way Frood, I do have A Town Called Malice on my digital collection. I love that one. Just an age thing as ever.
I suppose you had to be the exact right age in 1978 to appreciate this stuff by The Jam. Too young then, too old now, .
You're never too old for The Jam - or any other New Wave band!
By the way - I was 8 going on 9 in 1978 and didn't mind Brian & Michael - mind you I was into Blondie at the same time!!
Precious Wilson from Eruption - last heard on TOTP singing backing vocals to 'Belfast' by Boney M...
We probably won't get to see Eruption's 'Musik Laden' performance of 'I Can't Stand The Rain' on TOTP 1978 as the relevant shows (23-02-78 and 23-03-78) were both hosted by DLT.

Brian & Michael, Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs (even now I still forget if it is "stick" or "stalk", whatever the difference is!)really does have some nice sentiments about it, and was a fitting tribute song to Lowry who had passed away only very recently at the time, in 1976. I recall we seemed to do a lot of stuff about Lowry in school at the time for whatever reason, and his popularity was huge, as well as this song. If you'd asked me who Leonardo Da Vinci was, or Picasso I'd have had no idea.
As novelty songs go, it's up there with the best. Certainly not the worst No1 of 1978 at all. It was certainly of it's time. My only horror is that the first record I ever bought was a single that knocked Kate Bush from the top. Now that is a reason to hang my head in shame. Wish I'd got Wuthering Heights looking back, but that was then...and this is now!
Agree you are never too old for anything. But these era Jam hits don't quite hit the mark for me, though I love other "new wave" as you put it from that time.
Got this show knocking about on a few of my TOTP DVDs, but still looking forwarding to watching it again when I get home from work, now it's had its BBC Four airing. It's a shame that we don't get to see the Musik Laden performance of I Can't Stand The Rain, rather than Legs & Co.

Later in the year, The Jam set off on what I think is one of the greatest runs of singles ever...Tube Station, Strange Town, When You're Young, The Eton Rifles, Going Underground, Start...

Yes these 3 were classics - also liked That's Entertainment!

The Jam didn't reach the Top 10 in the charts until their 9th single.
Where are all the angry yoof these days. gen X with Idols angry snarl, the jam's paul weller.
Blondie still sound fresh now. Shocked to hear she was 34. Getting on a bit!
Eruption brilliant song.

Songs like the Notts Forest one are only acceptable if the team is on the show, standing in two rows, swaying and miming uncomfortably.
Meanwhile Spurs are turning back the clock to March 1978, when they were doing their best to blow promotion from Div 2.
People can say what they want about Fergie and AVB and whoever, none of them could manage a team the size of Notts Forest to win the European Cup. Twice.
With bad haircuts - which were standard.
Apart from Tina Charles and 3 absolute dung heaps (the painty song and the two soccer ones) good show tonight.

That's Entertainment is a must as well, even for someone who doesn't really like The Jam (although do such people REALLY deserve life:p)
Paul Weller taking a back seat this time, but he'll return in triumph later in the year with "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight".

If you took out the football songs and Tina Charles' dress made from her old curtains it would have been a class episode!!
Just wish they hadn't cut short the great Every 1's a Winner from Hot Chocolate!!
...And just as you thought Agnetha Faltskog was the most beautiful lady in the charts - up pops Debbie Harry!!

The whole thing seems to be erased from my memory for some reason . did Scotland win it ?
