Simple - West Germany would be the better team and they would almost certainly be the World Cup winners, as only Kroos and Klose weren't born in West Germany (or what it was, for the two born after reunification).

West Germany won it before, East Germany barely ever made it out of the group stages.

East Germany did famously beat West Germany in the group stages of the 1974 World Cup Finals in West Germany and actually topped the group.

Yes, I know and thereafter Beckenbauer gave his famous team talk in the middle of the night without the coach present. By all accounts he was less than kind that night.

My point is, West Germany won in 1974 and East Germany got knocked out in the next round. East Germany's greatest achievement in world football was that one goal against West Germany in the group stages of 1974.

Now if you were to count Olympic medals it would be a different story entirely, as the most successful German athletes traditionally were from East Germany.

West Germany would win the world cup after beating Chile 1-0 in the second round, Spain on penalties in the quarters and Argentina in the semis and Italy in the final 3-0 but with two disallowed goals for the Italians. East Germany will finish third in the group consisting of Costa Rica, Australia and USA - there'd be an electrical storm in the match vs the US leading to power outages in central Europe but not Switzerland, where there'll be a back-up generator that will probably be yellow or blue.

And that was in the only major tournament they qualified for, as they failed to qualify for any European Championships.
