How to improve skin??

I suffered from bad acne alot for a few years (age 14 to very recently) and while I seem to be free of acne for now, I'm still left with the horrific scars all over my face. I have lines across my forehead, I have "holes" down the side of my head and across my chin, random red marks everywhere and in general my face just looks shockingly dirty.

I wash my face twice a day and I'm scared to try any products in case it makes my skin any worse. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I spend very little on facial care products. I wash with Dove soap and 'Simple' facewash.

Drinking water, as Patchbuncle said is also advisable. I'm not sure if you can ever get rid of scarring without resorting to laser treatments, but they should fade with time.

I should have mentioned water. I drink alot of tap water (only a few days a week, though, when I'm at a relatives house as I don't trust my tap water) and occasionally bottled water. I try and eat healthy but I got told by my GP that it wasn't down to diet and that it was hormone related?

You want to try a crystal clear facial or something more hardcore like dermabrasion. Its fantastic for acne scarring, google it and have a look at the before and after photos. Depending on how deep the scarring is it may take a while, but it will be worth it in the long run. I think they can also do something with lasers.

when I was going through acne cyst spots stage I had the crystal clears regularly, my skin isnt perfect but without it I sure it would be a hell of a lot more damaged. There are treatments out there so dont lose heart. Good luck.

Cleanse twice a day using a mild cleanser or soap and use a moisturiser straight afterwards. I would use a mild scrub at least once a week to deep clean the pores. Your skin will improve over time but you could in the meantime use a foundation or good concealer to give you a more even complextion or you could ask your doctor to refer you for laser treatment.

Have you got somewhere with a counter nearby? It's a bit pricey, but the products are amazing and last for ages. I cannot recommend enough.

They will give you some samples to try and you can also buy little sets so you could try it for a month or two to see how good it is.

Good luck, I know how bad it feels when you're. To happy with your skin.

Have you tried Bio Oil for the scarring? I have some nasty scars on my ankle from recent surgery and it has made them fade so much in a short time!

Yes, Bio Oil is specifically for use on scars and stretch marks. Or plain Vitamin E oil - either of those should visibly improve scarring (but it will take time).

Get yourself on embarrassing bodies. It will be a change not to have to scrutinise someone's nether regions! :D Also take a look at discussions on Patient UK http://www.patient.co.uk/

OP can you not ask to be referred to a dermatologist via your GP? I sympathise having had acne from about the same age as you (I'm 44 now and still get the damn things!) and have tried all sorts of treatment ( e.g. Zineryt, Duac, Tetralysal, Yasmin, Cilest etc) as well as the usual OTC stuff that does nothing. So far the Tetralysal has helped clear it for a bit, but as you're talking scarring I'd ask to be referred. I have tried Bio-oil, it's OK but won't helped the pitted skin, just the scarring pigmented aspect.

Bottled or tap, neither will help with acne- scarred skin. Get a referral from your GP and see a dermatologist.

Hi OP this is really good advice, if you talk to your doctor and tell them that it really affects your confidence and self esteem they will at least be able to advise you on how best to treat the scarring and if you are lucky and get a sympathetic doctor they may refer you to a specialist or for laser treatment.

    Best of luck

While I know tap water won't make much difference, if you don't like the water where you are - buy a bobble bottle for around £10, I love mine, and was a fantastic buy.

Avon used to do a home microdermabrasion kit that I used to use when my skin cleared up a bit, and I saw a noticeable difference, it may have been discontinued though (most things I like usually are) but someone with more knowledge on Avon may be able to advise on an alternative.

I brought a microdermabrasion machine to use at home as I'd been going to the salon and it was sooooo expensive.
I've always had awful skin. Acne and scarring, and microdermabrasion is the only thing that's cleaned it up. My skin is now amazing, I can't believe how good it is, I absolutely never get spots now.

I have had lots of good success with my skin.

Water is great because it's easy but it also hydrates the body so it's useful for new skin cells.

The best products I have tried are:

MSM Powder. It's sulphur basically, taken in a glass of water and that's it. It is a mineral and has many benefits for the body but for skin it is fantastic, it turns the skin to a smooth silk and allows skin cells to reproduce easily. But it also has so many other uses for the both, loosens joints. Research it.

Castor Oil - Would work on the lines remaining. I got a bottle of this on Amazon for 1.99 and it lasts ages. Castor oil works by breaking down scar tissue and encourages new cells to grow. do a bit of googling and you'll see people discuss their results. It's great for the face as it breaks down scar tissue, removes toxins and is anti bacterial. I applied it under my eyes for a few months and it really brought all that skin back to life.

    Serrapeptase.

These are a natural chemical taken from the silkworm, come in pill form and when ingested, it causes the body to find dead tissue like scars and dead skin, inflammation and various scar tissues and break it down and dissolves them. I've read loads of people say this has caused their scars to go away from taking it. It has no side effects either which is good.

These things are all natural and rather cheap to purchase. No more than stuff you'd get in a chemist. You can turn it all around for yourself, I'd just say it can take a little time for skin to go from recovering from damage, skin cycles naturally take a while anyway but when it's damage there's more work for the body to do.

So it can be hard to stick with some things when the results aren't instant but anything you wanna try give it some time & you will definitely see results.

Hi, thanks very much for the responses guys. Really appreciate it. :)

I booked an appointment for that microdermabrasion thing this week! :D

Good luck Shadow - let us know how you get on.

I'm another fan of Bio oil - I use it on my face about twice a week despite having no scarring, it really lifts the skin. I also swear by Aldi's Lacura intensive night cream and use them in conjunction, it's like a mini-face lift!! I'm an ex smoker and drink far more wine than I should yet still look younger than my 46 years. (unless everyone round me is lying to make me feel good :p)

Excellent. I hope it works for you. I started with a weekly treatment for 10 weeks and I noticed a big difference after the first one.

Well I only booked the free consultation but I just saw the price to book one appointment is £35. I could afford it but it would mean I'd have absolutely no money for the next week and a half until my next payment. I don't want to pay for it and then it doesn't even help me out at all. Should I take the risk? After all, half decent skin at the interview is better than horrible skin.

Look for products with glycolic acid in them. I used glycolic acid to get rid of my acne, the f.eckers never came back.

I don't get complacent though, even though my skin is clear now I'll occasionally use some glycolic product just as maintenance.
