Yep. Best way to do it. That's what we did when we sold our last place and the carpet on the stairs and landing was looking tired. Most people will want to redecorate anyway, but a cheap, neutral-coloured carpet that's new and clean really brightens up the space and makes a good impression - and potential buyers won't add replacing it to their 'things that would need to be done' lists.
