You need to have a popular channel that consistently gets lots of views. Then you need to apply for some youtube partner thingy where you can make money.
Most popular channels on youtube are to do with gaming or clever parody ideas.
Working out and exercise videos also garner a lot of views.
If you are able to become a youtube partner, you'll make money from ad clicks.
The subscribers and the views that come with it will lead to companies wanting you to endorse their products. One channel owner said he turned down $40k because he felt it would compromise the integrity of the channel.
Although don't feel too sorry for him, he's just been given his own tv show.
As always do a little research and learn from other's mistakes.
Youtube is a very overcrowded market and its VERY hard to make money. If you have what you think is an original idea, you can be almost certain that someone else is already doing it and that they are doing it a lot better than you can.
It's easy to become a Youtube partner and for adverts to play at the start or during your videos, this generates ad revenue and that what earns money.
Really not much unless you are talking about the super popular youtubers. It's actually been said that the average is less than £1 per thousand views. It also depends on if people actually watch the ads, thats what they get paid for, the views of ads, not views of video.
Obviously on top of that big youters can sell their own merch which brings them in a good sum and often firms want them to endorse stuff which no doubt they get paid well for.
But in terms of actually making money from people watching your youtube videos, it's really not much.

Far too many people think they can get rich quick by making crappy videos that nobody really wants to watch though
