To add to the above, Sukhi Hayer was reporting from Dubai for the BBC Asian Network and when Test Match Special lost their line to the Dubai International Cricket Stadium yesterday, Kevin Howells was heard as their reserve commentator back in the UK.

These details come from Adam Mountford's latest blog on the BBC Sport website, who was producing TMS as usual.

Sunday 22nd January - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

NFL on 5 Live with Nat Coombs and Johnnie Mitchell from London, then Darren Fletcher from Candlestick Park

    American Football: AFC Championship Game
Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots - Dave Sims and James Lofton, with Tony Boselli at pitchside (8.05pm GMT commentary provided by Westwood One)

*Westwood One's commentary team in San Francisco will be Kevin Harlan and Dan Fouts, with Mark Malone at pitchside.

A few notes: Westwood One Sports is now going under the Dial Global Sports umbrella. It's been a busy day for Nat Coombs as he presented ESPN UK's Bundesliga coverage which finished just over an hour before he went on-air on 5LSE. Commentary on Super Bowl XLVI will go out on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday 5th February.

To add to the above, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Local Radio simulcasted parts of 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage of the NFC Championship Game during Up All Night around their commentary on the Andy Murray v Mikhail Kukushki match in the Australian Open Fourth Round which featured in a 5 Live Tennis special.

They took Darren Fletcher and Greg Brady's half-time chat with Alistair Kirkwood from NFL UK and the majority of the third period before leaving for the start of the Murray match (commentary on that came from Jonathan Overend and Jeremy Bates). At the conclusion of the tennis, 5 Live rejoined the Giants @ 49ers game at the two minute warning in the fourth quarter. They stayed with the game without interruption until its finish.

If anyone has listened to the game via the archive of 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage on the IPlayer to find it cuts off at this point in the game, select the relevantly timed '5 Live Sport - 5 Live Tennis' programme from 5 Live's IPlayer, jump to around two hours in and you'll be able to listen to its conclusion.

There was a nice touch by Darren Fletcher at the end of their coverage as he thanked USP Content's NFL on 5 Live producers by name - they were Phil Spooner and Neil Saffer in London with Simon Crosse joining them at Candlestick Park.

Fantastic coverage of both games last night - the NFL on 5 Live team and USP Content have done a great job on 5 Live Sports Extra throughout the 2011/12 NFL campaign and I'm sure 5 Live's coverage of the Super Bowl will continue in this vein.

    News about cricket coverage:
ECB and BBC Sport agree new six year deal for live radio coverage

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today announced it had agreed a new six year deal with BBC Sport for the radio rights to broadcast ball-by-ball commentary on international cricket from 2014 to 2019.

The agreement, which will encompass two home Ashes series in 2015 and 2019, and tours by India in 2014 and South Africa in 2017, provides BBC radio with live and exclusive coverage of all England’s home Test, One-Day International and T20 series.

The BBC had previously agreed a four year deal with ECB to broadcast live ball-by-ball coverage of international cricket which is due to expire at the end of the 2013 season.

David Collier, ECB Chief Executive, said: “This is excellent news for all cricket-lovers. Test Match Special brings cricket into millions of homes in this country each summer and is widely recognised for its unique and world class coverage of cricket.

“The next six years are set to be exciting ones for the sport and Test Match Special’s coverage together with the regular summaries and updates provided by BBC Radio 5 live will play a significant role in promoting cricket from the playground to the Test arena.”

Barbara Slater, Director BBC Sport, said: “We're delighted to be taking cricket on the radio forward for a further six years. Test Match Special, now in its 55th year, is one of the most treasured programmes on the BBC with its unique mix of expert commentary, insight, humour and entertainment. In a new digital era the programme and its accompanying download have never been more popular with its audience.”

I'd be very surprised it talkSPORT had made a serious bid (or a bid at all).
