Live Gold - still worth it?
I'm trying to decide whether to renew my xbox live gold this year or not.
With a new console impending at the end of the year (and hoping they don't charge you on the new one...) and the fact that I don't play games online generally (and I only want to get Bioshock and GTA this year so no new multiplayer ones) I can't see the point.
Am I right in saying that as a silver member you can download demos / arcade demos fine ?

Yes you can BUT some demo's are only available to Gold subscribers first. It's not as if you can't have fun gaming offline but for me, online is where it's at. You can still purchase XBLA and On Demand games and DLC so your'e not gonna miss out.
The problem however comes for people like me, Don't play online on console's much but on occasion may feel like jumping into an online game, However the cost of the Gold sub's isn't worth it for how little I'd be making use of it.
My last Gold sub ended about a year ago & over the 12 months I'd had it I had maybe only played online for around 4hrs if that. There have been times since when I've wanted to play one of my 360 games online but Im not willing to go out & spend cash on something I'd use as little as I would.
Word of advice, if you want to play online and you have a bunch of games from the last few years lurking about, just keep redeeming the 48 hour codes given free with some of them. That way if you or friends want go online and play Halo or similar but you don't have a sub, it covers you.
So to sum my long winded point, if you've got a similar habit to me in not playing online very much (or perhaps even at all for long periods of time), it's not worth paying the price in my opinion.
I dont play online as much as I used to but I have a Netflix account and a couple of others that I need gold for too, which is annoying. I'm waiting for MS to make me an offer I cant refuse
Am I right in thinking that's going on the basis you play online most nights throughout a year then? If that's the case, then yeah it's good value for you.
Completely agree. While I love to be optimistic about things, I can't see Microsoft doing that. If millions of people worldwide are still paying for Gold on the current format they won't see a need for change.
I know it doesn't become affected if you go silver for a while. Not sure if it would continue on counting though if you remained silver.
I've just been buying a month at a time when I know I am going on it. Same with the 48 hr codes for weekends. Just can't bring myself to buy a years sub at the moment. Although, am starting to become bothered by looking up the monthly subs so thinking I may as well just buy the year and forget about it!
Someone posting previously brought up an interesting point. I wonder will the new console charge for usage. Or maybe charge for certain aspects, since it isn't just a "gaming" console anymore.
XBL could be really good if they just weren't so... greedy.
I've been a gold subscriber for 7 years and never in the past had a problem paying for gold because I used to play online a lot even against random people so if you play online alot then it is worth paying because its less then paying for a night out and in those 7 years I've never paid full price for gold sub.
The next gen Microsoft need to rethink what gold is. The apps are not a good enought reason to pay cos my bluray and Apple TV do all of those and have quieter fans. Microsoft are trying to do better at content services like music and movies so giving a free movie rental a month wouldn't hurt them and may get people using Xbox movies more often.
Not making you HAVE to have a gold membership to use the apps in the first place would be nice too
I get my moneys worth out of it, So don't mind pay for Gold.
I only really have the odd splurge on Bad Company 2 multi-player.
I can get iPlayer/Lovefilm on the XBox still I think?...although I can get those via my blu-ray player too so not much of a loss.
I lost interest in CoD at MW2 and was disappointed with BF3 on-line as it was too CoD-like and not Bad Company-like. Yes, I know BF3 has differences to CoD but it still had that run around and shoot feel to it.
sort of fell out of the gaming sphere i was in(be that real life getting in the way or whatever),but i always found Live an extremely good service
Not seen any for many, many months now.
Bugger the xbox live offers ... I wanna know if the xbox720 is gonna be B/C with all my XBLArcade purchases ... Ive bought over 300 titles & I ain't gonna be pleased if I cant redownload em.
I am slowly working my way through all the back episodes of Starsky and Hutch.
There is literally thousands of movies, TV shows, documentaries and concerts to enjoy.
As Orzie says 10p a day is well worth it. I pay £1 a day for a paper that I never get to finish anyway.
Same goes for the likes of Netflix. You pay Netflix, and it costs Microsoft nothing yet you are forced to pay Microsoft to gain access to it.
It is a major con-job and PS+ shows it up.
Even if Microsoft gave away just one game a month compared to PS+'s 3-5 games it would make it much more worthwhile.
I am surprised subscription content providers let them put them behind a paywall as it cuts off potential customers.
